I realize that many of you are questionable of Nash's cap hit, but I really like the idea of acquiring him.
JvR is a player that I really like, but if I think the aforementioned all-star, who is still young himself and just entering his prime, could blossom into a 90-100 point player playing alongside a superstar center like Giroux. Nash has NEVER played with an even remotely above average center, so I really do feel as though he could reach his own full potential if given the chance to succeed in Philadelphia.
Now, people are going to say that we need to fix the defense first. However, if we dealt say JvR, Read/Bob (or both instead of a pick), and a draft pick for Nash, then I feel as though the club could address some of its team defensive deficiencies by acquiring veteran grinder FA's, particularly a big 4th line center and a winger. I don't really have a problem with our defenseman on paper as a unit (so long as we chose to re-sign Carle), but clearly the team defense needs to improve next season, and a lot of our problems could be attributed to our forwards.
Personally, I think it's imperative that both Couts and Talbot see time in the top 9 next season too.
Here's how the lineup would look:
Nash-Giroux-Hartnell
Schenn-Briere-Voracek
Talbot-Couts-Simmonds
Wellwood-FA 4th line center-FA vet (Moen perhaps?)
Rinaldo
Coburn-Grossman
Carle-Timonen
Lilja-Meszy
Gus
Bryz-Bob or FA, cheap replacement
Thoughts?

JVR is young versus Nash and his cap hit. You trade JVR and you are sending the wrong message. Sign long term and you get traded. IMO, you give him another year and address it next year. We shall see...
I'm all for getting rid of Bob and bringing in a cheaper back up, a veteran back up.
they have enough cap space to get things done.... |

I do like Nash but I believe his cap hit is 7.8 (?). What is the cap situation on your roster? Briere is the guy that has to go. |

Right, but what if things don't workout with JvR? Nash isn't going to be available next off-season, and this is a rare opportunity to bring in an elite scoring winger to put on the 1st line. Financially, I believe we could make it fit too. |

What wrong message? Accepting a very generous offer from one of the best organizations in the league. Getting dealt is part of the game. |

A lot of folks just want to give up on the guy.
I remember hearing a lot of the same knocks about John LeClair, and JvR has much better stats at age 22 than LeClair did.
A lot of times people forget that JvR's developmental path was not the same as a guy like Sean Couturier. Couturier's been playing against higher levels of competition, not going through NJ high schools and the USDT program that JvR took.
It's easy to be frustrated by JvR's slow development and inconsistent nature. I'm also not completely against trading him in the right move, but I think he's got a lot of value around the league. Despite the significant cap hit, he's still a 6'3" 220 lb winger who has a 20+ goal season at age 22 - Jsaquella
His game could be better if he used his size to his advantage but i'm also not one to jump and say move him unless it's a great return. Even then I'd hesitate.

I was curious as to why he felt Briere wasn't going anywhere. If he was unmovable or that he was too valuable to move. I don't think they can win a Cup with Briere as the 2nd line center. Homer needs to send him somewhere. Any return would be good. Slats was able to move Gomez so there's always hope. |
