A lot of folks just want to give up on the guy.
I remember hearing a lot of the same knocks about John LeClair, and JvR has much better stats at age 22 than LeClair did.
A lot of times people forget that JvR's developmental path was not the same as a guy like Sean Couturier. Couturier's been playing against higher levels of competition, not going through NJ high schools and the USDT program that JvR took.
It's easy to be frustrated by JvR's slow development and inconsistent nature. I'm also not completely against trading him in the right move, but I think he's got a lot of value around the league. Despite the significant cap hit, he's still a 6'3" 220 lb winger who has a 20+ goal season at age 22 - Jsaquella
My offer for Martin is still on the table. Homer better jump on it before the perceived amnesty clause kicks in. |

Serious. I don't get the Upshall crush folks have. Decent player but nothing to get all broken up about when he was traded. - Scoob
He scored that big OT goal against Thomas (?) that was the highlight of the lost season! |

He will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders next year. It's a very important season in his development. - stveshdy

even if there is a contingent of fans who would applaud any more that shipped the player out of town (and then would be the first to complain if JVR blossomed elsewhere) -B Meltzer.

The kid is 23 and is coming off a injury plagued year..
I love how the focus is always.. "He was the #2 pick". So lets see what we actually have in JvR.
We have a young hybrid power forward. Lets set this straight right off the bat. He is not, and never will be, John LeClair. He isnt Milan Lucic or Scott Hartnell.
JvR is more like Jeff Carter than those players. He isnt 6'3'' 220. He is 6'3'' 200lbs. He isnt a hulking player.. but he absolutely knows how to use his size. After his rough start to last season, he turned around and really took off. How much so? He was only leading the team in goal per game avg. From January on. Only Jeff Carter had more goals in the second half of the season. JvR was scoring at a 40 goal pace over the last three and a half months of the season. He took over in the playoffs and showed what he is capable of.
JvR is soft and doesnt hit. So the 107 hits he dished out last year is actually a farce. His isnt nasty. I would totally disagree. He doesnt drive the net, yet was directly involved in a bunch of goal crease scuffles, goals, and made contact with Marty on several occasions.
How about this. Be patient. Big guys take a bit of time to mature. They no longer can rely on the fact that they are bigger than the rest. His adjustment period is right on par with other top flight big guys.
Joe Thornton:
1st season- 55 games 3 goals, 4 assists 7 points
2nd season- 81 games 16 goals, 25 assists 41 points
3rd season- 81 games 23 goals, 37 assists. 60 points
Jeff Carter:
1st season- 81 games 23 goals 19 assists 42 points
2nd season- 62 games 14 goals 23 assists 37 points
3rd season- 82 games 29 goals 24 assists 53 points
Milan Lucic:
1st season- 77 games 8 goals 19 assists 27 points
2nd season- 72 games 17 goals 25 assists 42 points
3rd season- 50 games 9 goals 11 assists 20 points
Scott Hartnell:
1st season- 75 games 2 goals 14 assists 16 points
2nd season- 75 games 14 goals 27 assists 41 points
3rd season- 82games 12 goals 24 assists 36 points
JVR:
1st season- 78 games 15 goals 20 assists 35 points
2nd season- 75 games 21 goals 19 assist 40 points
3rd season- 43 games 11 goals 13 assist 24 points*
*Like Bill said.. he started the year at a 60 point pace.. and injuries derailed him. He has shown over his career his play gets better as the year goes on.. 65+ points really werent out of the question this season.. but injuries prevented that.
Ultimately, JvR is developing like a lot of other bigger players in the NHL. Have patience! - jak521

I'm in this club. Some would consider it consolation that most I know who did get the degree are in no better position employment-wise, yet have plenty more debt. I'm not that kind of person, though. - BulliesPhan87

Because he is soft! If he were hard a steel and chewed nails for breakfast this wouldn't happen. It is all his fault. If you want to be mad at someone blame JVR!

It's not luck. It's the result of a terrible training staff, remember? |

i was just kidding. meltzer has got it going on.
**serious question... what do you think about the possibility of trading away another player right before their new contract kicks in? do you think it would reflect poorly on the flyers or no big deal? |
