Bill Meltzer: Meltzer's Musings: Can Flyers Sign Voracek to Multi-Year Deal? - bmeltzer
I've been thinking we see the same sort of contract talks with Voracek and Svoboda that we used to see with Bob Sauve and Simon Gagne. No real desire to go elsewhere from the player, but the agent taking time to make sure his client gets fair market value after seeing where the other RFAs settled.
It's not worrisome, really. Unless somebody tries to poach Voracek, they have time to hammer out a deal that is fair for both sides. Not the end of the world if they end up with a one year deal. |

Agreed. I don't think Voracek wants to go elsewhere, and Svoboda and the Flyers are on good terms.
Another one-year deal wouldn't be the end of the world. Actually, if he performs at a high enough level, Voracek could stand to make considerably more in a multi-year deal reached next summer. The Flyers potentially have a lot of salary coming off the books after next season. |

Great article.
Any RFA is in a very tough position with the CBA expiring in September. If I were an agent, I'd take a 1 year deal now with 50% in guaranteed bonuses, then go long term under the new CBA next season.
Who knows, there may be max contract and UFA age changes by then. |

I think Sam Gagner and Jakub Voracek look very carefully at what each other are getting this summer: both 22 year old, somewhat one-dimensional 50 point players coming off promising seasons and 2.2 million dollar contracts. Should be interesting. |

Nice write up, Bill. Voracek is a great player. He's such a strong skater. I don't mind if he ends up being more of a play maker than goal scorer, but he could be very dangerous of he develops more of a nose for the net. With his puck protection and skating ability already strong, I think improving his shot will open up a lot of of space and opportunity for him. I see a lot of Forsberg in him along the wall, as well.
Once Schenn and Coutuier beef up a bit, this team will be even harder to play against. I remember thinking how scrawny couturier and Schenn looked at the start of the year. I believe the year carter scored 46 was the same season he came back considerably larger. The younger players are already impact players and they haven't even filled out their size yet. |

I think jake emerged as a core player for the flyers and a lot of that is evidenced by the way lavi trusted him defensively. I also think he put to rest the work ethic issues that were a question in CLB. I'd only move him for a young dman...don't think he would be the target anyway. |

I'm good with a 16-year, $50 million deal. It would end before Jake turns 40 -- the magic cut-off for frowning from Bettman.

Voracek is the type of player they can ill afford to lose or give up in a trade. IMO he has locked up the 2nd line Rw spot for a few years here. Hopefully homer can get a multiyear deal hammered out in the 3.5 range. |

Unless it's an over 35 deal or an entry level deal, there's no such thing as bonuses. Straight cash, homie!
But I get what you are saying. Absolutely. |

Very true. Timonen likely retires, and if the new CBA eliminates the over 35 rule or changes it to allow the Flyers to drop Pronger's cap hit, that's $11mm or so in freed up cap room for summer signings. Add in the end of the Shelley and Walker deals and that's another $2.8mm in summer space. |

Nice snapshot (boy could Jake take lessons) on Voaracek and his role/evolution as a player.
I was really impressed with how Jake's excelleration improved during the season. He went from a decent skater who could get to a pretty fast clip in three or four clear strides to being at full speed with a "power base" over his skates in one full stride. That kind of remaking your game takes a lot of effort on the players part. It looked like he absorbed things from the veterans...using his size and base along the boards to shield the puck, tightening his skating base and bringing his elbows in when skating with or without the puck,....those are Jagr and Briere traits....now if he could just get that shot....
One more year would be great for both I think. The Flyers continue to get his services and he plays in an environment where he is growing as a player. |

No problem with 1 year deals in these type situations. Nice change of pace from the disastrous multi-year deals of late. Keeps them playing at a high level for the next contract. With that said, he gets dinged up and misses considerable time, or slips back into his Columbus ways, the next payday comes at a discount. Two way street. |

I think long term deals can lead to added pressure and possibly complacency. I think you need to be smart when you hand out deals like that. |

No, sorry - Voracek is twice the player that Gagner is because he's bigger and plays defense. Your "one-dimensional" comment is way off. Sounds like something Clouts would say, honestly. |

I wanna see a Triple Crown, but I think that Bodemeister gets it done in Maryland.
I think it goes 7-5-9 for the finish
IOW, Bodemeister, Went The Day Well and I'll Have Another. It's going to be a day of favorites. |
