Kane threw a HUGE house party here 2 days ago.
Just thought I'd tell everyone who says it was a one time thing. - CaptainRivet
Who cares, it's his house, he can do what he wants within the confines of his own property. If he wants to party and/or get drunk at home with his friends in the off season, all the power to him. Much better than him doing it publicly.

It's OK, you make some good points, but some also I can't agree with.
1) When before has a major Chicago daily quoted a team source as saying he has a problem and might need rehab. THAT is the cat out ofthe bag, my friend. Upt til now there has always beenthis boys will be boys/he's just a fun-lving kid argument that could be made. Not so much (at all) anymore.
2) You don't think this will affect his marketability— specifically just the Madison photos, especially after the cab thing and Vancouver and . . . ?
3) Agreed. But that will not last if there's more stuff down the line
4) They might not have many smart hockey minds (debatable), but Rocky and McD are smart business guys. - John Jaeckel
I appreciate the continued dialogue. A few nits and a few responses:
(1) I don't think you can properly call what Jahns presented as a team source saying Kane needed rehab. It was an anonymous source within the Blackhawks' organization. Call it shades of gray, but it is a difference IMO.
(2) I do not think it will affect his marketability. If we start hearing anything out of Chevy or Lemonheads, then I'll revisit that. But the reality, IMO, is that this is still a small story. Kane wasn't arrested, no charges were filed, and the girl that was allegedly choked hasn't come forward or been identified. That in no way forgives any of Kane's indiscretions, it is meant to point out that the sort of thing that would cause a player's marketability to drop hasn't occurred. Kane is still commercially marketable and marketable to the Chicago fan. Indeed, in some ways, you could argue that Kane is more marketable now than he was a few years back (Cubs suck, White Sox are better, but don't have a ton of marketable stars, Rose is hugely marketable, but the rest of the Bulls aren't, Cutler doesn't do commercials and Uhrlacher is old, leaving Toews and Kane to clean up in Chicago).
(3) Also agreed.
(4) I think Chicago has very good hockey minds in Q and senior Bowman. They've certainly suffered a large brain drain in past years. But I also think that the powers that be, namely McD and Stan, have personality quirks that will cause them to suffer from paralysis from over-analysis. |

2) I have been in the advertising business for nearly 30 years. I'm telling you, the advertisers are plenty nervous.

Well, I don't know. Dan's always been very clearly camped on one side of this issue. A claim like that I think might be met with some kind of denial. |

a trade to MTL would not be a good idea for a party animal.
Does he have a nmc or ntc list of teams at all?
CHI should trade him anyway, need some size and power up front.

JJ,
Isn't the important thing to remember the advertisers will get another Hawks face to promote...If need be Sharp/Stalberg or someone else can shoot a commercial because...
The Hawks are the brand and they won't be tarnished by one player ...
It's not like Kane is Arnold Palmer, his advertising income would be much different if he played in most US cities rather than Chgo.
Time for the Hawks front office to be real. Fans deserve more than high expectations and hopes. http://bit.ly/JAdRXO

I don't think Kane can be replaced by Sharp/Stalberg, because part of what makes Kane marketable is the pairing with Toews and vice versa. Outside of the Discover Card commercial, you always see Kane and Toews doing commercials together. |

Agreed, on every point.
My take:
The Hawk brand is built primariiy on the core players, followed by Hull, Mikita, Savvy, Tony O, then the prospects, and the Indianhead as the common thread—past, present and future.
If the brand were a building, Kane and Toews, Hull and Mikita would be the four corners of the building right now. I mean it's always been about linking those two pairs of players, hasn't it?
It's funny and ironic because Hull was every bit the miscreant, but it was never publicized. Big difference.
Minus Kane, they would need to re-tool it a bit, Keith and/or Seabrook and/or Sharp (especially) would get larger roles. The beat would go on. Sharp, Keith and Seabrook do a lot of ads. Harris Bank, Grant's, etc.

Ha, that's not really true.
I think clearly I was an early voice that his issues might make it wise to at least shop him or consider dealing him. And then the whole argument erupted.
Hate to say I told you so, but if you haven't read Adam Jahns' piece in the Sun-Times this morning, you should.
He's a big-time talent. I have questioned how much he will ever evolve his game. I also think he is really right now and maybe forever, a completely finesse player. And I will always take the talented physical guy over the talented finesse guy. - John Jaeckel
Just read it, thanks to you pointing it out... Spot on to what you have been saying in the several months I have been here. |

You bring up a point which can't be denied and it wasn' publicized because it was a different time.
The biggest blemishes advertised about Hull came in later years after he finished playing....Kane is not in the same "league" ...so to speak, yet. |
