After reading all of the articles, the only thing that is clear from any of it is the front office displeasure with the visibility of the partying, and their inability to control or counsel Kane with respect to being seen partying. Big difference between that and needing to head to Hazelden.
I just love "one unnamed source" journalism....
Used to be an unwritten rule that you had to have two sources to corroborate claims before you could publish anything.
In the end, Kaner is still a knucklehead not wise enough to realize what he has and what he could be.

anyone who spends even a little bit of time in river north between the hours of 11 PM and 3 AM knows that PK is persona non grata at a lot of places.
So here's the acid test for you: if PK was your kid, would you let him behave like this?
yeah, me neither.
makes you wonder about a lot of things.... - droppedgloves
@ 23 mommy and daddy should not be babysitting you. Ridiculous statement and part of the reason my generation and his generation have a bunch of petulant teenagers in their 20s incapable of surviving on their own or dealing with disappointment.
I did a lot of stupid between 19-22. Didn't get caught but not a millionaire either with people taking pictures. Come to think of it there are few pictures of me in compromising positions and separated by several years. I am of the opinion he either hasn't grown up yet or has a problem.
If he wants to act like a 19 year old who had their first beer every night, its his prerogative and they should move him. If he is wrong place wrong time but making an effort to be an adult (which could be a possibility but looking less likely) then you move forward and do what is best for the team.
If he has a legitimate problem and wants help then provide that support. If has a legitimate problem and does not agree with that assessment then move him.
There really isn't a middle gray area here and I think the organization has a better idea as to what is going on than the fans do. |

Just a hunch, but if Kane is traded to Montreal, does Bergevin somehow get Savvy in the Organ-i-zation to maybe "watch" the kid? |

I think that is still the rule in many major outlets...
Time for the Hawks front office to be real. Fans deserve more than high expectations and hopes. http://bit.ly/JAdRXO

1) I'm not sure I see a difference.
2) I have been in the advertising business for nearly 30 years. I'm telling you, the advertisers are plenty nervous.
4) You might be right - John Jaeckel
(1) To me the difference is what the club is saying versus what an anonymous employee of the Hawks is saying. Put differently, if my name and my company's name is attached to an article it carries more weight than if an article says anonymous employee of X company says this. Anonymity allows a comment to be either from the organization or the individual person. A name and title creates the impression that is the opinion of the organization.
(2) Nervous, I'm sure, but they aren't pulling their sponsorship yet. And sponsorship isn't the same as marketability. Talent, scoring, all that is what I think drives team marketability. Kane still has that, though, IMO, the bloom is off his rose after two poor playoffs the last two years. |

This is becoming a problem for more than just celebrities: with potential employers now looking at the social media - Facebook, etc. - and "demanding" passwords, "normal" people Kane's age are feeling the pain of embarrassing photos in the social media that they never thought could hurt them.
EVERYONE needs to grow up sooner, for better or worse.... |

your point is well taken- but I'm not really talking about "babysitting." I think this is more about values.
That said, you could argue it the other way as well: it is the LACK of "firm" (for lack of a better term) parenting that there is a "generation of ...petulant teenagers...incapable of surviving."
I agree with JJ: getting a 6 yo boy to not piss on the toilet seat can be a battle royale. Maybe no one can help PK to stop acting like a douche (notice I didn't say "...help PK be a nice person). But I hope someone out there makes an honest effort to get him to change his behavior for the better. |

Yeah, well that's the point though. There's nothing egregious that says I'm a raging alcoholic fire me. Which is why I don't understand some of it. Keeping a low profile isn't that difficult if you can hold your booze and not act like a total beat off.
I could consume a disgusting amount of alcohol in my hay-day. Passing out at the bar is beyond absurd in my mind.
I've flipped out on my share of Cab drivers who try to go the long way from Rush st to Wrigley but I wouldn't think assaulting one is ever a good idea. Typically (especially if you're spending money) even peons like me don't get bounced unless you start a fight, puke, or they ask you to not be stupid more than 4 times.
I get wrong place / wrong time. It happens. And I get 22 and stupid. Been there. But some of the other crap registers as far from normal in my mind. |

1) I've heard this argument over and over again. Until the team reports it in a statement, believe nothing. Well, it's up to you. Bottom line is, with most teams, the actual facts can be scrubbed and/or spun quite a bit before they make the official statement. As far as sources, i always try to make clear that you need to know that some are more reliable than others. I will say this, Adam is a good guy and a good journalist and when he says a team source, I would say it is 99.9% certain that's what it is. Further, I thought he attributed a second team source in the article, did he not? My point is, if you want the truth, sometimes an anonymous (to the public) source is going to get you a lot closer than the official team statement. And if you want to know what's going on earlier, ditto.
2) Again, I think you are off here. If he makes one advertiser nervous—who has a contract with him— other, future advertisers will steer clear. And that is his marketability, period. There is a scientific metric of how celebrities are perceived called q ratings. Things like this affect q ratings immediately. Go google how advertisers fleed Rush Limbaugh like he had a disease when he went after a woman in a contraception debate (just an example— no politics please). Kane's marketability HAS already been affected. Believe me.

I wanted to ask an expert but that's what I thought...
It's funny and ironic because Hull was every bit the miscreant, but it was never publicized. Big difference.
You bring up a point which can't be denied and it wasn' publicized because it was a different time.
The biggest blemishes advertised about Hull came in later years after he finished playing....Kane is not in the same "league" ...so to speak, yet. - Al
IMO I think the difference is time period... Kane does this crap 20-30 years ago.. before the interwebs.. no one cares.. Now you can't do that.. You pee a different color, 20seconds later its out there. |

We will take him on Buffalo. Don't really understand while this getting drunk thing is a huge story. It's the offseason, no? - ImThatGuy
it seems like it's not an isolated thing, that's the issue. he's a moron for continously putting himself in these vulnerable situations and you can't help but wonder what the guy will do next. frankly, he isn't a good enough hockey player to be such a sideshow. |

(1) Fair enough. And I respect Adam as a journalist. I don't doubt for a second that the comment was true or the quote was accurate. My point was that until it comes from the team there is a level of plausible deniability from the club.
(2) Also, fair enough. I don't doubt for a second that his marketability has been affected. I don't know how significant that is or whether it is downgraded enough to: (a) effect McD's overall view of Kane's value to the club; (b) effect Kane's trade value. That was the original point to which I was directing my comments. |

What is all this talk about rehab? He went out on a holiday weekend during his "Summer break" and got drunk. He did not break rules. I get the perception issue, what I dont get is why it is being perceived as one.
I got drunk this weekend twice on the beach at a party. Do I need rehab (Rhetorical question)
If he was doing this all the time, say during the season on game nights and days before a game I could see rehab.
I see no wrong doing on the part of Kane. He got drunk. So did thousands of others. They are just not millionaires and can go bank to their banking, computerd, desk jobs without any regret. - ImThatGuy
I get it...Your his cousin or something right???!!
Kane has personal issues HE needs to deal with. Until he does. I dont want him on the Hawks. Its that simple.

Staal & 3rd for Bolland and Saad? You'd be taking on about a half million more in salary. You get your 2nd line center and the best player in the deal. Only problem is Staal only has 1 year remaining that's why we throw in the 3rd. I know it's off the Kane topic and I considered a swap but we would be taking back salary and I don't think the Pens want to do that at this point. - dbell646
Hells no! Pens should under nearly any circumstance not trade Staal. They need more players like Staal, why trade him? I'd prefer Crosby or Geno to the wing, trade Martin...that should cover it. |
