Unfortunately I must be. I know how terrible Detroit is, but I dont think it has any bearing on whether or not ppl would play for the wings. Eastern Market and West Village section (not far from the Joe) arent bad areas.. - jak521
I don't think it's a deciding and definitive factor, but I don't doubt the thought doesn't cross some players mind from time to time. |

I don't see the Flyers making that many changes this summer. I think Homer keeps most of this team intact. He may add another defenseman and probably a forward. I don't know if they make a big move this summer. |

there are good areas sure, but I'm just saying there are people that would rather not tip toe around on their commute to work and have to worry that if they make a wrong turn they won't come alive. - JoeRussomanno
I guess the current NHL players that play there aren't worried about that. Lidstrom has re-signed to play there how many times now? Making it sound like it's Afghanistan and they're going to have to dodge the Taliban on the way to the Rink. |

On top of it.. the history also matters. Like I posted earlier.. Detroit Red Wings was the #1 team most players (328 polled) wanted to play on if they could. - jak521
i was surprised Philly or Boston didn't show up on that list. |

I disagree. Homer gets what he wants. He wants a big name D-man and he will get it.

sounds like a dump
Bloomfield Hills is a city in Oakland County of the U.S. state of Michigan, 20.2 miles (32.5 km) northwest of downtown Detroit. - FlyersFirst[4] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 3,869.[5] Bloomfield Hills consistently ranks as one of the top five wealthiest cities in the United States with population between 2,500 to 9,999 — it currently is listed at the number four position and in 1990 it was ranked number two,[6] and has the highest income of any city outside of California, Florida or Virginia. The median income for a family is over $200,000. In 2000, 49% of residential property in Bloomfield Hills had a value of over $1,000,000.[7]

I would imagine the current players are not as well but I don't think its such a stretch of the imagination to say that there are those that would rather not. I mean supposedly the KHL pays more money and from time to time attracts players over there however I do read that the conditions are big reason why players haven't conducted a mass exodus over there either. |

I would be perfectly content with adding a guy like Mike Weaver for the 6th spot (and to have some depth on defense)... and Slater or Campbell for that 3rd/4th line floater.

There are 30 teams in the NHL that would want Suter, so he has a lot of options. There are probally 10 teams that would all be willing to spend what Detroit will, including the team he is already with, that look to be a winning team, and a family that is already settled down.
Like I said, if I were Suter, Money and contract arent going to be the selling points to an orginization, as there are many that will give him what he wants. Its going to be living quality, and winning chances that make the final decisions.
And for those that say that the city's economy has no impact on the players... I will remind you that Joe Louis Arena was built in 1988... If they cant aford to keep lights on at night, how can they afford to build a new arena when the time comes....
And as for winning. One of the biggest reasons Detroit won so much recently is because of a guy that is retiring, and the rest of the good players are on the wrong side of 30. For someone that is going to be signing a LONG term deal, these considerations have to be in the decision.
Again I cant speak for Suter, but I would not want to sign in Detroit. - RooNosHockey
See Jaks link in his post. Apparently Architects have been hired and the new Arena is in the works. |

They have to split up JvR and Briere because neither can play defense in their own end. |

I think the bottom line is that the conditions of the inner City of Detroit aren't going to be a factor in a players decision to sign there or not. |

I'm wondering if Snider's comment that Holmgren has to fix the defense first, is another mandate from the Owner. Similar to last year with the goaltender. |

I'll have to check with the local census board first and find out how many ghettos Philly has vs Sunrise, Fl to see if it'd be a good fit. |
