It's somewhere close to the beginning of the season from what I read...

Maybe Bill can help us on this...

Yes, right before opening night. This past season, the submission deadline to the NHL was 3 p.m. EDT on Oct. 5.

from Elliotte Friedman's latest blog:

13. In discussing the New Jersey forecheck about a week ago, Parise gave some insight into what Philadelphia will be looking for. Parise said one of the reasons the Devils successfully pressured the Flyers was the lack of a right-shot defenceman to move the puck on that side. The only one on the roster is Pavel Kubina, who was a healthy scratch for the series.

Not really a VH fan, I like some of their old stuff, not a fan of their stuff of more recent vintage.

As for "current" bands, I'm not really a fan of any to be honest. More of a fan of the 60-70's era.
Think British Invasion, and subtract the Beatles, and the Stones.

Jaekel wrote a bit on the Kane situation in Chicago today. Didn't realize how bad it was.

If any of the rumors (of that weekend) are true, it's bad. Good chance for someone to buy low on Kane and hope that he matures as he gets older.

I had the issue at the time. I was following the draft while at a wedding, and when they didn't grab Parise I shouted out, Who the (frank) is Jeff Carter?!?!?
- Jsaquella

Now we know he is a soft (along the boards and in front of the net - I'll grudgingly give him credit for playing through some injuries), inconsistent, non-clutch player who goes AWOL in the playoffs and is currently happy to be a passenger on the LA Kings bus in the Stanley cup finals.

Yeah, I wish they'd have taken Parise too.

Parise Career points 502 194 216 410
Carter Career points 516 202 175 377

Pretty comparable I would say and not like Carter was a dud at 11. If we are really getting technical we missed out on Corey Perry as well who went 29 and we took Richards just before him. So yes deep draft that year

- Daceroni

Look at playoff stats though.

Parise 0.75 points per playoff game (56 GP, 20G, 22A, 42PTS)
Carter 0.48 points per playoff game (62GP, 17G, 13A, 30PTS)

(Also remember that Carter padded his goal # with a meaningless hat trick in a 4-0 win against Phoenix in the Western Conference Finals).

Speaking of drafting players...not looking too good prospect wise in Flyer land according to Hockey's Future:
http://www.hockeysfuture....eam-rankings-2011-2012/4/

23rd out of 30 teams! Ouch!

Strengths: After several years of little depth in their organization, Philadelphia made several trades that rejuvenated their pool this summer. With two potential all-stars at center in Brayden Schenn and Sean Couturier, the Flyers are very strong down the middle. Additionally, the Flyers have excellent depth on the blue line and a large number of third and fourth line forward prospects on the wing.

Weaknesses: Philadelphia is very weak in prospects at the goaltending position. With many young players on the NHL team, there are only the two high end centers among the forwards in the system. Also, there are no high end defensive prospects in the Flyers' system.

Top 5 prospects: 1. Brayden Schenn, C, 2. Sean Couturier, C, 3. Erik Gustafsson, D, 4. Eric Wellwood, LW, 5. Brendan Ranford, LW.

Lost to Trade: Stefan Legein.

Parise was also a beast in team USA's push for the gold medal in 2010. I think he was 3rd in the entire Olympics in scoring. Carter wasn't good enough to make Canada's roster!

I would have thought that we were top 5 in the league with young talent.

G, Coots, Schenn, JVr, etc...

Seems like meaningless rankings when our young players are at the NHL as opposed to the minors.

IMO we could use a scoring winger, but the only thing we truly lack is cap space and flexibility.

Phoenix has nothing but defensive prospects. Perfect team to trade with. We could use defense and they could use some offense.

You always want to try to keep the pipeline full, but it's not a huge concern at the moment.

The Flyers have eight top-9 forwards aged 25 and under and only one defenseman (not including Pronger) over the age of 30.

Guess Homer is banking on JVR being that "scoring winger"!

Agreed! Just scary to think that it appears the Flyers don't draft well outside of round 1...at least according to many so called experts.

That's outdated... they just released their updated rankings and Flyers fell 3 spots.

http://www.hockeysfuture....nkings-spring-2012-21-30/

26. Philadelphia Flyers

Strengths: The Flyers had a youth movement for which they never received full credit in the previous rankings. They played seven rookies regularly and dressed more some nights. Forwards Brayden Schenn, Sean Couturier, and Matt Read all played significant roles during both the regular and post-seasons. Beyond those prospects that saw extended NHL time this season, the Flyers have a large collection of solid role-players and bottom-six grinders.

Weaknesses: With graduations galore, the Flyers are back to being a team that’s razor thin on prospects. Eric Wellwood is a promising forward who will graduate before long. They may be weakest in goal but really have no identifiable areas of strength.

Top 5 Prospects: 1. Brayden Schenn, C, 2. Eric Wellwood, LW, 3. Erik Gustafsson, D, 4. Marc-Andre Bourdon, D, 5. Jason Akeson, RW.
Lost to Graduation: Sean Couturier, Matt Reid, Zac Rinaldo.
Lost to Trade: Stefan Legein, Jon Kalinski, Kevin Marshall.
Added: Matt Mangene, Cal Heeter, Matt Konan.
