If Pronger retires due to his injury, if he has insurance it will pay him. If he doesn't he won't be paid. If he retires, the team and its insurer are not required to pay a player who has retired. And if he retires the team is stuck with his full cap hit with no relief.
If he does not retire and is on LTIR, the team's insurance pays his salary and there are concessions that allow the team to, in effect, use the cap space to replace him.
