That would be Ideal but past practices have me on edge. - JoeRussomanno
I been reading a lot on this Schultz kid and I think the Flyers should make a serious run for his services. Young talented kid who can play at both ends of the ice. Perfect fit for the Flyers. |

They probably will but isn't one thing he is looking for is a guaranteed NHL roster spot? |

I think he is. If Shultz is legit I dont think this should be an issue. The Flyers could be in need of a defense. Pronger is done and Timonen may not be in great shape to start the year. I think hes better than our current 6-8.

Yes but you don't guarantee him a spot, you make him earn it & keep the option open to send him down if he struggles. |

That's understandable. Most teams feel that very same way. If he plans on playing for a serious contender then he wont be able to ask for that. |

Your problem there is that Lilja is on a 35+ deal. So he is your 7th D man. Both Bourdon and Gustafsson will have to clear waivers to be sent to the AHL. Which both would likely be claimed.
Correction: Gustafsson is exempt. So it's just Bourdon that you'll have to worry about losing. |

I'm not letting Bourdon stop me from adding a young defenseman who has the chance to be very good. Bourdon may be in the lineup to start because who knows what the deal with Timonen will be. Chance they also move Bourdon for picks or in a package. |

Cousins plays Center. Shultz is a defenseman. |

Just seems like the right move for the Flyers. Weber is what they probably would like to get but the possibility depends on Nashville and Weber himself. Shultz is a young kid who can be very good. The Flyers can pretty much keep this team intact and still draft with their picks. Just another option but I'm not even sure if Shultz would want to come here. |

2010-11: Schultz was one of the top defenseman in college hockey as a sophomore at the University of Wisconsin. In 41 games for the Badgers he scored 18 goals with 29 assists and was +16 with 28 PMs; scoring 9 of his 18 goals on the power play. Schultz was named the WCHA Defensive Player of the Year and was named to the WCHA and NCAA West First all-star teams. The Badgers finished an uncharacteristic seventh in the WCHA; falling to Colorado College in a tightly-contested three-game first round playoff series.
Talent Analysis
Justin Schultz has been one of the finest rearguards in the nation two seasons running. He has a complete offensive game, capable of igniting plays from his own zone, carrying the puck through the neutral zone and making confident, creative plays in the offensive zone. He has shown a strong commitment to improving his defensive game and strength, although he will never be a physical force.
Future
Schultz faces all the challenges a thinner defenseman faces trying to make the leap to the NHL, as well as an adjustment to the 82-game schedule. Nonetheless, he possesses such a comprehensive skill set and sound work ethic that it hardly seems like a reach to project him as a top-four defenseman.

I hope we aren't talking about a Matt Carle and JVR mutant or we might have all hell breaking loose by like December
Edit In all seriousness tho steve I haven't really followed or put much into potential draft picks until recently. I'm vaguely familiar with this stuff. I come here to learn |

They need to add a legit number one. Just adding a guy like Schultz isn't going to get us too much further. Im not opposed to adding him but they really need to target other guys first. |

The biggest need is the current group of players, from forwards on back, to play better team defense. Without that, Shea Weber, Ryan Suter, whoever, is only going to have a limited effect on the situation. They would help, certainly, but the rest of the team has to step it up and play better.
I mean, who was the Devils' stud defenseman? Bryce Salvador? |

Schultz is a talented kid, but expectations need to be tempered. He basically is limited to a 2 year deal for around $900K, and hasn't played professional hockey yet. I'd worry about pople expecting him to step in and be Erik Karlsson - Jsaquella
Well we know that ain't gonna happen. However is he that good where he can step in and knock a Gust or Bourdon out of the lineup? |
