The obligatory first....

No Akeson or Ranford in Randy's article. What's the skinny on them Bill? Did the deadline pass to sign Ranford?

Ranford was not signed. He's no longer Flyers property.

Akeson needs to work on his all-around game and is undersized, but I would personally have him on my list.

There's a lot of other routes they can go. If a big scoring wing is a need, Parise is a FA and a better all around player

IF the Flyers can't acquire Weber (which I think is a long shot) I would have no problems just upgrading the 3rd pairing and add a 4th line center who can play special teams and win face-offs. Wait till next year when Edler or Enstrom becomes available (possible Weber also) and make a run at one with Timonen coming off the books. The Flyers don't usually show patience so will soon find out what they do.

As far as the draft goes whoever they draft is not going to have an immediate impact. That player will need time to develop before being called up to the big club. So selecting the best available player is probably the route to take.

Nash seems like a smokescreen. The play is for Weber in my opinion, and if that doesn't work theyll just fill in some role players as others have suggested.

It wouldnt surprise me though if they kicked the tires on Evander Kane to see what the Jets would want. I imagine theyd want JVR in a swap of sorts, but would that really be an upgrade?

I hope you are right about the Nash conversations being a smoke screen. This week coming up should be interesting to see the trading activity around the time of the draft. Then, it is always an interesting around the first week of July when free agency starts.I hope no one puts on the show that Brad Richards did last year with the various teams lining up to give thei offers, etc. It was not as bad as the NBA players a couple of years ago, but still too mucgh dog and pony show for me.

Kane has a lot of talent but his all around game is an issue. Didn't he get benched for lack of hustle or effort? I dont see the big upgrade moving JvR for Kane.

Kane was supposedly the main piece that the Flyers wanted in a proposed/rumored/alleged Mike Richards to Winnipeg trade

I have to say when it comes to the draft, I would really like Thrower. He skates, has a bit of sandpaper to his game. You can't coach size, but there have been too many BIG defense busts in the first round.

IMHO, Nash is one of those..."let's go look in the Porsche showroom on the way to the VW's". If the right salesman grabs you, you might make a BIG mistake....*expensive that is*. In the case of Nash, who would have been great to get years ago at the draft if he really did fall to 4, the price is WAY too high. I don't see the price for Weber or Suter being all that much better....There are several players who could be the calk that the Flyers need ... and after years of trading away depth for the "one key" wouldn't it be better for a change to assemble a true cast of characters?

I'd be very suprised if the Flyers draft a goaltender in the first round. However, I do believe the Flyers do value a higher ceiling as opposed to safer pick in the first round. Out of all the prospects listed by Bill over the last few days, I would guess Slater Koekkeck would be close to the top of the list if they stay at #20.

Ultimately, I still believe Nash ends up with the Rangers especially with goal scoring being a problem last year coupled with Gaborik's injury to start the season.

Great blog, as usual, Bill. I heard a rumor on Facebook that Prongers house is for sale. If true, this would seem to be the final nail in the coffin...so to speak. If this is "it" and we have closure on Prongs, Weber is the ONLY true option out there to replace him. I surely hope this Nash stuff is a smoke screen to divert attention from the real prize.

Bill, Great articles about the potential draft picks... A question; Of the kids you've written about - which ones (if any) have a shot at joining the team next year?

Nash and NYR...
http://prohockeytalk.nbcs...till-hot-after-rick-nash/

I don't think Nash is going to be traded unless the demands are lowered. His cap hit doesn't help his trade value so why would a team give up a fortune for him? I rather have 4-5 players then one guy.

Dustin Leed‏@D_LEED

Hate this word, but from separate “sources”… they’ve told me Rick Nash will end up a New York Ranger.

I do believe Slather can't help himself in this situation. If he can move Dubinsky as part of the deal, he can make it happen. I am thrilled Slather is tinkering with the team chemistry on that team. As long as Stepan or Kreider go in the deal, I'm a happy Flyers fan.

I think either way Weber is gone next year from the Preds. You either pay Suter close to or over 7 to keep him(in addition to the 7 they're already giving Rinne) or Suter walks and they can't build a team strong enough to keep Weber interested. Unfortunately free agency starts after the draft and Suter is going to hold everything Preds up til July. Do we look to make a different deal at the draft or hold out til July to see what happens in Nashville?

Hockeyy Insiderr ‏@HockeyyInsiderr

#CBJ and the #Flyers had a #DEAL on the table, AGREED which would have sent #NASH to Philly. BUT everything is OFF the table. Guess WHY?

Hockeyy Insiderr ‏@HockeyyInsiderr

I can confirm 100% #CONFIRMED that Nash will NOT waive his NMC to join the #Flyers. Philly has MAX 72 hrs to convince Nash or #NODEAL. #CBJ

So there's that.

I think Homer holds tight at the draft personally. However, I do believe Poile will not have a problem tying up $21 million or more in three quality players. It will be interesting to see how the situation plays out in Nashville.
