To be honest with you, I love JvR. I think it's short site (no offense) to just come and say "Well, we did well without him this season, so therefore we don't need him". Let's say we did have a HEALTHY JvR all season long? In my mind we would have been even better a team. More goals would have been scored. This should mean we would have got more wins. More impact.

The impact Shea Weber would have on the Flyers would make me EASILY forget about anything JvR was, is or ever will be. He could be the next John LeClair and it would not matter to me one bit.

FWIW I wasn't slighting Danny B at all. My point is that you can get Wellwood for less than 1.5m, and that is assuming a 100% raise from this year.

As long as Briere keeps bringing it in the playoffs, I have no issue with his cost.

Your post says Kyle Wellwood, we don't have him, we have his younger brother Eric.

No kidding. Did you take a look at the rest of the conversation? We were discussing Kyle Wellwood.

You can't count the bonus cushion that only came into play this past year because they had no CBA beyond this season.

I have no idea what Weber will want, that's not for me to speculate.

They've also have a number of chances to move Shelley to the minors and haven't don't count it as something that will happen just yet.

- ob18

I agree on Shelley, so there is an extra half mill between him and Sestito/Harry Z. Or 1.1 if you carry Shelley AND one of the other two.

But I thought that this year there was NO bonus cushion because the CBA expired, not the other way around. Wasn't that what screwed the Flyers this year?

Me neither. I'm actually a Danny B fan. I personally would like him to get some steady linemates next year and I think he can have a rebound regular season too!

I think they got nailed because BOB and somebody else reached a bonus in the prior year. Not 100% sure on it.

He's been rumored to be on Flyers radar. Even was mentioned on CSNPhilly at one point.

What exactly does he bring to the table that they don't already have on the team and a system full of in the minors?

Genes.

Actually, I think he is an upgrade over what is in the minors now. But the assumption is that he would only be added if they lose more than two forwards in a trade. Then he is relatively inexpensive and compared to what else they could get in the <1.5 million range, I'd be ok with him.

Who would you want for less than 1.5 million in that scenario?

EDIT: My scenario is that they also add Carle, which others of course refute. I guess the other option would be take Carle's net vs. Bourdon/Gusty/Lilja and get a 3-4 million forward.

Guys who can bring something other then a fringe 3rd line or 4th line player is nothing you want stocked in the system, those are a dime a dozen & they have that market probably cornered.

The thing with choosing to go after Weber now or waiting till next season is he may not be available then, or there may be more competition due to free agency.

If you have the chance to get a player like that, you do so.

It becomes even more important with the current make-up of the D.

If Kimmo was younger then a guy like Weber wouldn't be such a need. However...

Agree. That's why I hate when they draft guys like Klotz and Mathers. I'd rather reach for some unknown Lithuian forward than waste a pick on guys like that.

It's what they have a fair amount of right now. I'm more of one who likes to keep picks, develop them, & bring them to the big club. Then when you have such an amount of depth then you can deal from a position of strength.

I have always had the mindset that when you can acquire a young cornerstone and franchise changing defenseman like Shea Weber at 26 years old... you do it.
- Flyers2821

Not for a 1 year deal. He's UFA after that. Where's the thinking?

This is a tricky slope to me.

If it comes down a guy like Landeskog or RNH I pick the former each time.

While I think you need players with elite talent, there are often times where in a 7 game series the guy with more heart and grit determines the outcome.

For all of the talk of who to get, I would really like for this team to stay consistent with the culture change that was supposed to have started last season.

Bring in the guys who bring a blue collar mentality.

We don't know what he'll re-sign for.
