I was talking about how you don't have to be physical to play well defensively. Hence I made the statement that I alluded to. - MJL
Where I stated a defensive d-man who brings a physical game is a better player than one who does not. |

except that we've lost or about to lose our 2 best dmen and there are no standouts in our lineup or in the pipeline. this is one case where I would prefer a bigger move. - isaiah520
If the team can't play better defense, adding a big name will have a limited impact. What's a better top 6 on paper:
Carle, Timonen, Coburn, Meszaros, Grossmann & Gustafsson or
Volchenkov, Salvador, Fayne, Harrold, Zdlicky and Talinder?
I'm fine if they go out and trade for Shea Weber. I'm also cool if they go out and add a solid vet and focus more on playing better two way hockey |

I'd almost prefer a guy like Buff to Enstrom. |

I really think they need to get the forwards to work on the defensive game more than anything.
A lot of the time its simply guys standing around or being lazy on back-checking. Thats not the system, its on the players. I would be alright with 2-3 of the forwards being swapped out for players with better defensive games. |

Not always the case. There have been plenty of very good finesse defensive defenseman who are very good players. Two very good examples of defensive defenseman who aren't really physical defenseman who are very good. Is Willie Mitchell and Rob Scuderi of LA. Both players averaged less then a hit a game. You may personally prefer it and have that opinion. But again, it isn't necessary to be a good defensive defenseman. That's my point.

Couldn't agree more. Far too often goals against were caused by poor backchecking or breakdowns where the forwards were culpable. |

This Flyers team doesn't have an issue with laziness, as a whole. They make mistakes in coverage, but effort isn't the issue.

I wouldn't base judgement about our d based on a "lightning in a bottle" run by a mediocre crew. I like our chances much better with a standout guy and most of the cup teams have followed that script as well. one Karlsson is worth 2-3 of our best guys.
without solid team d, we might not even make it far enuf inthe plyoffs in this division. |

If those two stanley cup winners played more of a physical game they would be better players.

I agree. It's possible, but I think you need that stalwart back there. Whether that is an exceptional puck mover such as Doughty, or that physical monster such as Weber or Chara. That goes a long way.

And if a physical defenseman such as Coburn or Grossmann, could skate, shoot, and pass the puck better. They'd be better players.

I could very well be wrong but I don't see how 2 seasons is a huge leap of faith. If we can't pick up Weber or a player of his status, someone has to fill the hole that Pronger and Timonen leave behind. The season between losing Eric Desjardins and picking up Kimmo Timonen was a last place season. I'd rather have J-Bo then nothing at all. - Schenn2shine
as i said before, i can see this happening. and yes, i would think garbage (salary) with talent (JvR) goes the other way....
i get what people are saying about Jay Bouwmeester being overpaid and not worth his salary....but again, after this coming season he would replace almost the same exact salary of Kimmo Timonen...then, he either gets resigned (most likely for far less)...or he's no longer a Flyer.
look at his numbers....it's almost crazy how night and day they are from FLA to CAL. if he's putting up FLA numbers, i would think he's not a bad option B if Weber/Suter doesn't work out |

physicality doesn't always make a you a better dman. swifter skating, crisper passing, and an accurate shot will ALWAYS make you better on the blue line |

Absolutely. But have you read Bill's recent blog on the grass is greener? There are very few defenseman who bring the total package. And the point remains the same. You don't have to be a physical defenseman to be very good defensively.
