Pavelec is pending RFA with a big $ offer from KHL. It will take $4mil\multi years to keep him in NHL. Pay or trade him...Jets only options. - stveshdy
Feel a little bad for the 'Peg. Hopefully they get a deal done with Pavelec and Kane, otherwise they're set back another few years. |

Not if you get Weber for him it won't be. |

Depends on the return, if he's part of a package that lands Weber, E. Kane, Bogosian, I think people will be happy, if it's for Luke Schenn people will go apepoop.
I think it would be a mistake to trade him NOW because I believe his value is at an all-time low. If you want to trade him to address areas of need, do it when his stock is high. - PLindbergh31
I have heard a lot of people say that his stock is NOT low. They say that his cap hit is very friendly for his ability, and the fact it is a long deal makes it even better. Sure he isnt going to get you what a normal 2nd overall pick would, but his value is still very high. |

Yep. He's not Matt Gilroy. He was a 2nd round pick and has a lot of potential. He could probably step in right now and do a good job for a NHL team. - Jsaquella
Schultz's point production as a 20 year-old dman in the NCAA was rather remarkable. |

Indeed, it's 100% about discipline... not just with regard to penalties, but having discipline to forgo a risky pass/play that could result in a turnover, having the discipline to stay within the system at all times, having the discipline to stay in defensive position come hell or high water, having the discipline to maintain proper gaps, and having the discipline to show up at the rink ready to compete for each and every game.
Bringing in an elite defender, bringing in a top-flight goaltender, changing the system to play more defensively... that stuff is all window dressing. The teams that went deep in the playoffs this year were the most disciplined in all the above aspects -- the undisciplined teams were prone to mistakes and meltdowns and were bounced early.
For the Flyers, a lot of it has to do with experience... young guys are still trying things that might have been their bread and butter in lower leagues but are ill-advised at the NHL level... guys are still trying to figure out what it takes to get to that game-in-game-out consistency... teammates are still building chemistry and trust in each other. Some of it has to do with coaching, but a lot of it has to do with the team needing more time to mature and come together as a group.
Weber's not going to magically bring the team together... it's just going to a step sideways at best, like all the big name moves of years past. - Tomahawk
I agree totally with all of that, except for Weber being a step sideways. I don't agree with that at all. Adding that kind of player on the backend is big giant step forward. |

This is really going to be one of the more interesting drafts in recent memory with such a huge lack of consensus after #1. Though still the remote possibility that the Oilers completely eff up and select a future #4 dman in Ryan Murray remains. - OrangeBlack27
The Oil are just dumb enough to draft for need at #1, too. |

He's coming off an injury plagued season, he's got hip issues now, and his Cap hit is rising to 4.25 million this year, these are all significant factors with regard to his value. |

They could pretty easily trade down to 4 or 5 and still get Murray. I cant see them taking him #1. They'll draft Nail and then be in the same boat as us trying to ship young promising forwards out for defense. |

What is going on with E.Kane. Is he demanding a trade or something? Why are there so many rumors about players leaving Winnipeg? First Enstrom, then Kane, now Pavel... I see Pavel because there is a KHL offer, but what is the reasons behind the rest? |

The rumors seem to be that ownership has turned out to be quite the penny pinchers.
I wonder what a deal for Kane would take? |

I'm just saying what I heard lately. JVR is young, signed to a long contract, that should be a deal if he produces at the pace he did before his injuries this year and in the playoffs last year. Some teams see that as a bonus, especially if they have difficulty signing/resigning players, al la Nashville, Columbus, Islanders, ect.... |

Even with Weber, the weaker defensive players are going to be exposed, albeit to a lesser extent. But he's not going to be playing 60 minutes a night. As good as he is, he can't cover 3 guys in his own end if a forward's lazy getting back. - Jsaquella
Weber has played for the Preds for 7 years and they've how many cups have they won? It's obvious it takes a total team effort to play sound defensively.
My concern would be giving up another round of "future" to chase that elusive big name/big game player the Flyers feel they need. I was opposed to the Pronger move and I'd be weary of this one - depending on the players/picks involved of course, but it would have to hurt.
The Flyers have four solid defensemen (assuming Carle signs) and a nice young team who have some issues on the defensive side of the ice. That, regardless of who they bring in, will need to be addressed.
Personally, I'd love to have a young stud d-man on the backline, especially since Timmo will be leaving next year and Pronger all but done. But if it guts our future again for the second time in the last three years, it may come back to haunt us very soon. That'll be 4 first round picks and 5 pretty good young players traded since 2009 if this deal goes down with only one darn good d-man to show for it.
Tough call. |

Right now JVR is being paid on what he might become, now what he already is. That is a calculated risk the Flyers took. If he develops as expected the deal he signed could be a bargain, but by no means is that a given. |

just based on my gorilla math estimate, they're probably missing out on 15-20mil a season in revenue because of the size of their barn.

I don't think the move guts our team for the future. They still have a solid nucleus of young players to build around. One of them is already a star. |

If I was Homer I'd make a call about Kane AND Enstrom. Both seem to want out and we have JVR under contract for a good long while... Obviously it would still take a lot more on our end but those two guys would be killer additions and if they both want out then why the hell not ask? |

1. I dont believe this has much to do with Weber. He hasn't emerged as the top guy until 3-4 years ago. Also who do they have offensively? David Legwand?
2. The Pronger deal sounds very similiar IMO, but what happened when we got Pronger... He took us to the cup... with Leighton and Boucher in net.
3. I think if we hold onto Giroux, Schenn, and Couturier are future will be fine for the next 5-6 years. Homer will continue to make the most of later picks and UFA signings. Weber will still be 32-33, and Giroux, Schenn, and Couts wont even be 30 yet. We will be fine. Don't worry. |
