With the future of Chris Pronger in jeopardy, the Philadelphia Flyers have been looking for a defenseman to replace him.
Ohhhh snap
Apparently their search has taken them to the Avalanche where, apparently, they have called about the services of restricted free agent Erik Johnson.
Jimmy Stizzle (judge his validity on your own) reported that the Flyers are trying to send James van Riemsdyk to Colorado for Johnson.
Van Riemsdky is the left winger for Philadelphia that teams apparently covet despite the fact that his best statistical year is 21 goals and 45 points.
Johnson, a former first overall pick, had a rough start to last year but from Decmeber on, he showed the Avs glimpses of the player he can be. He became physical, aggressive and played all around good hockey.
Time will only tell if the words of a random twitter person are true but from this end, the Avs should be getting their money's worth, trading away their defensive leader. - Philly1980
I think this would make Crims quite happy. Am I wrong? |

I think Ryan has another level to show. Keep in mind he wasn't always with Getzlaf and Perry. He was on the 2nd line mostly. At least he was 2 seasons ago when I watch 75% of their games on CI. Koivu was always getting hurt it seemed. Selanne is great but plays a similar type game in that he's more shoot and score, than pass and set-up. Ryan and Giroux would compliment each other very well imo. - rockychocbill
I agree to the fullest. I think that would give us a true number one line with hartsy on it.. Ohh la la.. |

The difference is your money is spread out and filling a void meanwhile you have a player in JVR who's potential could be about 2/3's what Nash will give you. Even still I haven't been all ho hum about adding weber either. - JoeRussomanno
Joe, I actually agree with you. I'm not really psyched about adding a nearly 8 million dollar a year player. I think this team is extremely talented and that the defense deserves a shot to redeem themselves. However, I also wont complain or cry if the Flyers add an extroadinary talent like Nash, Ryan, or Weber. |

Ohh snap from the Avs guy - Philly1980
a. from "some dude on twitter"
b. can't believe i'm adding another thought to this post, but they gave up c-stew AND shattenkirk for johnson. don't think they'd give him up for just jvr. not after just one full season, imo. |

Really when their contracts are up they won't be due for raises that if the Flyers take on a contract like Nash's they might not be able to handout said raises to all or some of those players? - JoeRussomanno
They will be due for raises but they will be RFA's. Giroux is the one to worry about. |

Agreed. Which brings me back to my Bobby Ryan thought from earlier. Who is going to play with Giroux this season? Can/should we count on JVR for that role? I agree it's the "logical" choice on paper. Just too risky given his ongoing, non-surgically repaired hip issue imo. - rockychocbill
Bobby Ryan would be great in that spot. But not for the proposed deal that was offered. That's just a plain bad deal. I also don't see any reason to be concerned with JVR's hip issue at this point. |

Schenn is the only one in that deal that would concern me. Read and Bourdon are both replaceable. Schenn has heart. And skill. Maybe more heart than Ryan. I see JVR and Ryan as almost identical players, so you couldn't have them both at the same time I don't think. |

It's not about a player being replaceable. Any player can be replaced. Many overrate Ryan as a player. And you don't overpay for a player in a trade just because the players you're giving up are replaceable. And I see no reason why you couldn't have JVR and Ryan on the team at the same time. |

Normally I feel the same way, but there are soo many directions the Flyers are rumored to be going... Are they going to get Nash, Ryan, Weber, E.Kane, Enstrom, or Bowmeester? Or are they going to stand pat and try to sign someone in FA? Or are they going to move up in the draft. Some prospects in the top 5 said they had meetings with the Flyers this past week. The top 2 North America D-man, the top European D-man, and the 2nd top European winger.... So much going on, I'm freakin out man. - RooNosHockey
Tune in next week to find out what happens! Something could happen totally out of the blue. But chances are, something will happen. |

I think people are making too much of these rumors to be honest. From observing Homer's actions the past few seasons, he seems to be the kind of GM that shows interest in all possible players, trades and ideas. That is a good thing. It can't hurt to see who's available, what the asking price is, and so forth. I think these rumors are a result of Homer giving some teams calls, seeing what they are asking for their guys.
I guarantee all these rumors are true, because there is no doubt that Homer has considered pursuing free agents, trading for a player, or moving up in the draft, but it doesn't mean they are likely to happen. These are all things he has the ability to do. In the end, I think we will end up seeing only one trade or free agent signing, which will ultimately be the one Holmgren believes is best for the team.
Just because JVR, Schenn, Couts, etc come up in rumors doesn't mean that Homer wants to trade them. They are probably being discussed in trade talks but Holmgren knows it is wise to leave them together. Unless he gets a deal he can't refuse, he won't do something stupid.
I can't wait to see what happens! |

Very well said, and I agree totally. Just dipping his toes in the water to see what the temp is. explore all opportunities and see what's out there before making a decision in what direction to go in. |
