WHo is your Mezaros esque backender though? - JoeRussomanno
I haven't gotten that far yet....
The first one that came to mind was Andrew Ference. Solid vet- good positionally....plays well in his own end....puts up decent offensive numbers....only a 2 and a quarter cap hit....
Of course- I don't know how expensive he would be or if he'd even be available in the first place, but I think he'd be a good addition |

The ltir doesn't go in effect until the season starts. Over the summer those LTIR salaries count minus 10% - JoeRussomanno
No I understand that, but is Schenn's bonus money being factored in as well? And btw, I get what you are saying about playing responsible defensively. I think that will come as the team is another year experienced. I don't feel the defense is as bad a problem as it is made out to be. And now demonstrating that acquiring Nash puts them in no worse position financially as they are today, I can totally understand what Homer is doing. |

Is Adam Oates still playing?
The only downside to the Flyer's silly season is that we are always facing cap issues. No different this year. - Daman
I'm thinking the downside to the silly season is the wait so that I don't have to read/ignore stupid trade offers, potential rosters, and even worse articles by hockey journalists who know very little about the sport they cover and it shows in their work.
Thank God for Mr. Meltzer. |

Why though? To take the place of Gusty or Bourdon? It's just another acquistion that is a lateral move that costs assest and money. He signed through next year and then you got to pay him more than he has been making because he has been pretty stable in Boston. And is he leaps and bouns better than anyone the Flyers currently have? |

First, Nash isn't an over 35 deal so if he got hit, he could retire without his cap hit counting anymore against the Flyers cap. Secondly, if you traded JVR (4.25MM) and Bob (1.75MM) you've just took away 6 million of Nash's 7.8. You would now have only added 1.8 million to your salary cap. Factor in further the EL contract at some point you would have to give your first round pick (obviously doesn't mean this year, but you would hope your first rounder would be on the team sooner than later) and you are looking at around what: 1MM-1.3MM? Theoretically you have traded to Columbus any where from 7 to 7.3 million of Nash's cap space. You don't need to add a forward to the lineup because JVR is replaced by Nash. You do need a back up goalie which could be had for .875MM (which is what Marty Biron's cap hit was with the Rags this past year). At most you added Rick Nash to the team at the cost of a late 1st rounder (which hurts) and a 1.6 (max) a salary equivalent to most 3rd and 4th line players.
Frankly, the deal doesn't necessarily hurt the Flyers as it is mostl a wash each way, putting them in essentially the same position they would have been next offseason when Weber is a free agent and guys need new contracts and Timonen's money coming off the books. - Flyers1218
No, the Flyers need to shed Bob's salary so they can add to the roster. By sucking up all that space spreadout by two/three players isn't trading away capspace it's taking it on and then some. THe Flyers only need isn't defense it is also adding a true fourth line which they don't quite have. They are in position now to add those low end forwards that can kill penalties, win important faceoffs etc.
You want to add nash be my guest, hopefully homer knows better, otherwise good luck with the Ea Sports Hockey team. |

That's what they all say.
I don't see why the flyers would go for Ryan. Defense is the area of need if anything. |

Schenn's hit is $1.7M until July 1 for summer cap purposes. After July 1, the new cap ceiling kicks in, and Schenn's hit is the full $3.11M hit, unless the NHL states that there will be a bonus cushion in place for 2012-13. |

I think he offers better defense than both Gusty and MAB. And that's what we should be addressing- the defense of both the team and individuals.
We got Grossmann from Dallas, and we immediately saw an improvement. Another defensive minded blueliner is exactly what this team needs, in my opinion. |

IF you're trading for a big time forward who is not known for his defensive play, you're not doing anything towards keeping the team together or improving the team's overall defensive play. |

he'll go somewhere around 10. would probably take a lot of picks or our first and a young roster player. |
