CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $68,021,944; BONUSES: $2,705,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $2,278,056

Further more, add a little more than 2 million as Schenn will never even come close to touching his bonus money and the Flyers are working with close to 4.5 million of cap space next year. Forwards are identical except penalty killing and 4th line extroadinaire Prust is added and Nash replaces JVR. Biron replaces Bob and we can see what this defense is made of all together for a full year, with plenty of space if Weber should become available midseason. Take away Timonen's money next year and the Flyers are working with around 10 million in cap space again which they would of been had JVR and Bob (who would of needed a new contract) and a presumably the 1st round draft pick was vying for the position on the team.

All that is showing is you can have that roster for a year. What happens in a few years when Giroux, Schenn and couturier are up for raises?

What a trainwreck

As an 18 year old, I only vaguely remember the Lindros days. But I do remember that he was my first "favorite" Flyer. He and Recchi.

88 was a (frank)ing tank. One of the most complete players to ever play the game. The physicality and take-no-prisoners, mean spiritedness of Pronger, with the size and skill of one Mario Lemieux.

His game was absolutely mind blowing. I remember him not deking around a forechecking forward, but going THROUGH him Earl Campbell style.

A freight train. It's a shame his head had to slow him to an abrupt halt

- Giroux_Is_God

to summarize in hindsight of course, the Flyers (perhaps if Clarke decided to build an actual hockey team and not a WWF on ice act this wouldn't be the case) traded major pieces to a couple cup runs for Lindros.

The ltir doesn't go in effect until the season starts. Over the summer those LTIR salaries count minus 10%
- JoeRussomanno

Not minus 10%. They count in full over the Summer.

First, Nash isn't an over 35 deal so if he got hit, he could retire without his cap hit counting anymore against the Flyers cap. Secondly, if you traded JVR (4.25MM) and Bob (1.75MM) you've just took away 6 million of Nash's 7.8. You would now have only added 1.8 million to your salary cap. Factor in further the EL contract at some point you would have to give your first round pick (obviously doesn't mean this year, but you would hope your first rounder would be on the team sooner than later) and you are looking at around what: 1MM-1.3MM? Theoretically you have traded to Columbus any where from 7 to 7.3 million of Nash's cap space. You don't need to add a forward to the lineup because JVR is replaced by Nash. You do need a back up goalie which could be had for .875MM (which is what Marty Biron's cap hit was with the Rags this past year). At most you added Rick Nash to the team at the cost of a late 1st rounder (which hurts) and a 1.6 (max) a salary equivalent to most 3rd and 4th line players.

Frankly, the deal doesn't necessarily hurt the Flyers as it is mostl a wash each way, putting them in essentially the same position they would have been next offseason when Weber is a free agent and guys need new contracts and Timonen's money coming off the books.

Why would a player like Nash retire and not get paid what he is owed in his contract?

Schenn's hit is $1.7M until July 1 for summer cap purposes. After July 1, the new cap ceiling kicks in, and Schenn's hit is the full $3.11M hit, unless the NHL states that there will be a bonus cushion in place for 2012-13.
- Tomahawk

That is incorrect. Schenn will count about 2.7M on the Off Season Cap.

The difference is your money is spread out and filling a void meanwhile you have a player in JVR who's potential could be about 2/3's what Nash will give you. Even still I haven't been all ho hum about adding weber either.

If Schenn, Read and Bourdon gets Bobby Ryan in return then Holmgren shouldn't hesitate at all, in my opinion.

Rinaldo-Talbot-FA/??

Jagr coming back isn't out the window either.  If he comes back, he could play alongside Briere and Hartnell.  Or they could keep this set up and go with a guy like Travis Moen or David Moss for the 4th line.

What if Schenn ends up being a better player than Ryan in 3 years?

Really when their contracts are up they won't be due for raises that if the Flyers take on a contract like Nash's they might not be able to handout said raises to all or some of those players?

A hefty price indeed.

But people forget, watching Lindros in his prime was awesome.

Too bad they didn't have the other necessary pieces, they didn't protect him, and of course the concussions.

Now we enter the G era. Barring some more Simmonds knee drops, it should be fun to watch.

I don't think anyone forgets how good of a player Lindros was in his prime.

I don't forget that but I certainly remember Forsberg etc. raising the cup with Colorado added in with Detroit smothering the Lindros line while they skated around the other two wwf lines.

Trading Schenn would be a big mistake.

Trading JVR would be a mistake. A bigger mistake would be not putting him with G for a year. I want to see JVR and G together this season.
