I gotta agree with gravy here - superstar isn't just about stats, it's personality too. Ovechkin's a superstar. Kessel is not. Star for sure and elite talent, but the tag just doesn't fit.

Mike Gartner is 6th all-time for goals with 708, and I wouldn't call him a superstar. Cicerelli's another - 60+ and not in hall of fame - why? not a superstar.

- Big_Lightnin

While I do agree Kessel is not a superstar.....I completely disagree with being a superstar has to do with personality too. Whether you're quiet, a jerk, obnoxious, reserved, or a loadmouth...it doesn't matter.
If you are elite talent on consistent basis, you are a superstar......Kessel isn't there right now.

Wait, so 3 years in a row, he scores 30+ goals (36 last season), he's not a superstar, but Kessel is?

interesting...

Edit: If Kessel was still in Boston, you'd say he's nothing more than a 30-35 goals guy.

- Pecafan Fan

Who does Moulson play with on his line??

If Kessel was in Boston scoring 30-35 and drawing the number one defenseman to cover him, I'd say the same thing as he is a Leaf.

No.

I'm just saying, 37 goals isn't elite.

No if Kessel was still in Boston, The Boston fans would be sucking his 1 nut and calling him Elite, But Because he plays for the Leafs its the opposite.

Oh and I don't think hes Elite, In My eyes an elite player can put a team on there back and say I got this tonight and single handedly wins the game for the team. Kessel definetly is not that type of player.

Never gonna win a lady byng, though.

The obvious difference between Kessel's goalscoring and Hartnell's is that you know Kessel can put up 30+ goals consistently, regardless of who he plays with... Hartnell is really inconsistant in his production.

- Schenn-Sational!

but Hartnell has value when he's not scoring. Kessel doesn't.

soo, you consiger, Gartner, Cicarelli, Recchi, Tkatchuk superstars? all had over 500 goals.

I don't.

Maybe personality is a bad choice, but for me superstar requires star quality as well as elite skill.

Toews - not Ovechkin-like personality, but most would classify him a superstar...

though this is all semantics anyway.

fully agree Kessel isn't anything other than "star" until he at least is a perennial PPG player. Doing it once isn't enough.

Ask yourself a question.

Would Philly trade Hartnell straight up for Kessel??

If you don't answer the obvious then don't bother responding

Who cares if he's a superstars (for the record I don't think he is), he's young, has amazings talents , has been improving every year and is signed at just over 5mil.. sounds like a player most teams would like to have on the top line.

kessel: more offensively gifted, faster

hartnell: more balanced game

both are stars, neither are superstars

I'd give Moulson the upper hand. Kessel's had the benefit of Bozak feeding him the puck, whereas Moulson's had to play with slugs like Tavares.

Ah yes... the "Is kessel a superstar" debate

I fall on the side of ... Who gives a F*

Can we just trade him so we can move on and never talk about him again

Burke... why did you do this to us??

I bet Kessel would score at LEAST 80 goals playing with Tavares.

not to mention moulson is 29

he's been around longer.. kessel hasnt reached his prime years yet.. i'd say he's just hitting them now as he is getting into his mid twenties
