if i were gillis i'd offer schneider a nice fat one year contract to buy time to move luongo.. also, it gives the nucks time to prove to schneider that they actually DO view him as the No 1. which would make resigning him next year all the more easier - Dozzer
I dont know. It's a weird situation... while I agree that luongo wont get moved anytime soon... I just think that carrying him on the roster just adds more distractions and what not to the team... Dunno if gillis wants that or not |

I am doing the best I can to not follow the hockey conversation since we are starting to rival the Sundin and Forsberg and Kaberle days with our constant rehashing of the same crap.
Do you think we should trade for Luongo? What do you think it would take to get him? - GoneFullRetard
now that we are actually talking about it....
was this not a sarcastic rhetorical question? assumed you didn't actually intend for this to happen |

I've been involved in a debate like that before.
For example, look at Crosby. His wingers don't score more because they play with him. Notable examples: Kunitz and Malone. They have pretty much the same numbers year after year, with or without Crosby as their center. - Pecafan Fan
Armstrong had 40 points in 47 games playing with Crosby.
Thats all Crosby. |

But you get the idea.
Playing with a better center doesn't mean you'll double your output. Kessel creates his own chances more often than not. He's not standing by the net waiting for a guy to feed him the puck for a tap in. - Pecafan Fan
So true. What it does is opens up the ice a little more. Instead of have to focus most of your attention on one (maybe two) guys, you've another talented guy to contend with. In that sense, maybe Kessel gets the opportunity score more points. |

why does he need cap space? the cap is going up to 67million this year.. and if the new CBA rolls the cap back, salaries roll back with it
gillis is in no way in a tight spot right now.. he still has 12-15million left with only schneider and a couple of role players to sign.. he has more than enough cap space - Dozzer
He needs the cap space to acquire another top 6 forward....... they aren't cheap |

word is Schneider will hold out though - he wants to be #1. They might not be able to sign Schneider until they trade Lu (as per discussion on That's Hockey yesterday" - Big_Lightnin
thats nothing more than the toronto sports media machine making poop up
gillis hasnt even begun talks with schneider or liut
and not one of those three would say anything like that publicly |

only in the media.. i am sure both luongo and schneider are professionals and would deal with it as such
its a big pile of weak arguments the media machine has hyped up to try and generate a story.. nothing more |

Schneider would get you a great deal. Funny thing is though, with Luongo, you know more or less the caliber of goalie. Schneider is probably a little more of a mystery, IMO. - A_Tree
not that big of a mystery... kid's been money at all levels, and team has full confidence in him. he's ready |

I agree. But his shooting % was crazy high like 18% or something. Sounds like a lot of tap ins to me. |

short term contracts are always inflated
long term deals offer more money but less per annum.. typically anyways |

He left that 2% as an "Out plan" so if it doesn't happen, he can fall back on it.

Kind of like the Kaberle and Sundin situations. At least we were able to move Kaberle for something before his value became "too low" to worth being moved. Sundin is a perfect example of what happens when you harass a key franchise player too much (both within, and outside of the organization).
'Nucks are lucky that Lu is locked down for so long. |

thats my point tho....Schneider has 68 TOTAL games of experience and yet they feel as though he can take them to the cup??....seems rather risky to me! Id rather move the unproven goalie with upside and value to tweek your roster so you dont get slapped around, rather than moving your proven goalie for peanuts and not be able to tweek the rest of your roster very much....imo, they fail again because they dont address their real problems.

they have more cap space than the leafs do
how much is this top 6 guy gonna cost?
ok.. lets say 5mill
7million cap space left
schneider.. another 5million
2million left.. and all they need is to have a couple guys play small role playing positions.. you can get those for under a million each
the nucks are fine capwise |

but Hartnell has value when he's not scoring. Kessel doesn't. - DoubleDown
Kessel's a very good playmaker, and even when he's not scoring the goals, he's setting up others to do it.
His speed creates space for other players, and while he's not great defensively, he's always one of the first guys back. He's not the one-dimensional player people like to say he is. |

they were implying it came form the agent... but ya.
Still, Schneider hasn't been qualified (to my knowledge), and he's 10 days way from being offer-sheeted. And he damn well better offer-sheeted if he's still unsigned July 1st.
