Once again I completely understand. My only issue is when have the Flyers ever been right on selecting a defenseman? Now when it comes to forwards they are legit. - stveshdy
Maybe thats why they had pronger scouting in the front office?????? god im begining to sound like EK |

pitkanen and sbisa weren't bad picks, imo. - OrangeBlack27
Both those players are role guys. Nothing better than a second pairing. Thats still two players out of many. I don't even know who they consider at this pick so it may very well be a forward that they love. |

This going to be the topic of tomorrow's blog, but to answer an earlier question, it is very hard to find NHL-ready defensemen in the Draft. Even players who are as highly touted as Adam Larsson last year often end up as healthy scratches in the playoffs of their first NHL season.
Ryan Murray is said to be NHL ready or very close. Cody Ceci is also believed to be very close. Griffin Reinhart is likely going to take longer -- perhaps a few seasons longer -- to emerge but may have a Shea Weber-like upside in the long term.
There are plenty of "safe" defense picks in this year's draft, who have 3rd-4th defenseman NHL potential and could be ready in 2-3 years but don't have huge upside at the NHL level. Matt Finn is one example who could be available in the Flyers' current range, along with Olli Määttä and Ludvig Byström. There are also some players likely to be available beyond round one who are pretty safe projections to develop in time into decent 4th-5th defensemen, such as Ville Pokka (compared by one scout to Toni Lydman) and Mikko Vainonen (a Nicklas Grossmann type with better foot speed).
Then there are the riskier, swing-for-the-fences types with higher offensive and/or physical upside but greater potential to miss the mark entirely. The two big names here are Matt Dumba and Slater Koekkoek, with the next step down being Derrick Pouliot and Dalton Thrower. Sleeper types who fit this profile include Jordan Schmaltz and Esa Lindell. |

sure, not saying they're franchise guys, but it's a tossup between pitkanen and ryan whitney (who went the next pick) as who was the best dman in that first round in 02.
and second pair is good value where they took sbisa at 19. |
