This pick sounds like Girgensons was really their guy they planned on picking at #12, but when Grigorenko wasn't picked, they had to make up a "Plan B" on the fly.
- buffalofan19

That's the same thing I was thinking. It had to be that way. I think they thought they had to go for it and take Grigorenko and then try quickly to acquire a pick close there after for Girgensons. It's good that Darcy has a good rapport with Feaster because it seems like that trade wouldn't have happened that quick if he didn't.

My guess is you are more excited than the Catenacci pick, right? You better be.

Either way, that's 2 years in a row where we took a guy you were calling for. Nice work kid

This night could not have gone any better. They turned the organizations weakest position into their strongest in a span of 10 minutes. Kudos to Regier and Devine

Now go get Bobby Ryan tomorrow and make it a perfect weekend

I swear, Darcy seems to come out and shock you just when you start to think he's incapable of doing anything worthwhile.

great first round by the sabres. Hodgson and Girgensons down the middle will be really good in a few years. I do think Grigorenko will be better suited playing RW.

They better come strong because the Pens, Flyers and Rangers will along with a few others. Problem is Darcy overrates his players and that may hurt, that's even if they want Ryan.

It just makes sense. I almost always give GM's the benefit of the doubt when it comes to the draft. I don't watch enough junior and NCAA hockey the way I watch College Football and Basketball to make enough of an opinion. Reading articles just doesn't do it for me either, but, when it comes to a guy like Grigorenko, who sounded like a consensus "can't miss" except for some off ice concerns (i.e. being Russian with the KHL, etc.), you have to make that pick. As far as Girgensons goes, I had no idea who he really was, but I am never going to criticize a GM for moving up and getting a guy like that. If you really like the guy and really want him, go get him. If he doesn't pan out down the road, I reserve the right to use my 20/20 hindsight, but in the NHL draft, you should always draft the best player available, regardless of current need, especially when you're in mid or late round. Most of the time, they won't be ready to play for a couple of years anyway (Grigorenko sounding like an exception), and your needs could be completely different by then, especially in the cap era. The moves were bold, and I like them.
