Howson is an absolute idiot. Trades one 2nd for Bob and takes a goalie with their other 2nd. Why not move up with the two 2nds and take Subban and keep the 4ths ???

I agree with jvr and a pick for Ryan, but nothing more. I would still love to get schultz. This would help address d without giving up young talent.

Remains to be seen.

I want to address the weak draft. All drafts have players who go on to have All-Star seasons and/or end up as long-tenured players in the league. This year's draft was called weak because there aren't all that many forwards -- and that's where the strength of a draft gets pre-judged -- who are projected as potential first-line types.

However, in terms of sheer volume of players who will go on to play in the NHL at some point or another -- whether as a regular starter, depth or fill-in player -- it may actually turn out to be an above-average draft in that regard. No one knows at this stage.

Focusing mainly on the top-60 picks, with the balance heavy on D and G, I'd venture to say that there's going to be quite a few busts when all is said on done, as I'm sure there will end up being a few real standouts.

I agree. Everyone is saying that the Pens made out great. Really? They lost a player, who if he moves out of the shadow of Crosby and Malkin, and plays with quality linemates, can be a real good player. He's already scored 27 goals in a Season, and he may be one of the best defensive Centers in the League. He may totally blossom in Carolina. So let's not pretend the Pens didn't lose anything here.
- MJL

agreed! Jordan is every bit as good as his brother Eric, and depth is important, the chance for Carolina to land Jordan like this is huge! Although the consensus is that they could/should have only offered 2 of the 3 pieces that they did & Pittsburgh received a nice package for a guy with only one year left, and was a lock for Carolina anyway.

Because Subban has as good a chance of being the next Trevor Kidd as he does the next Martin Brodeur.

So essentially Holmgren traded Bobrovsky for a goaltender. Ok then...

OK, weighing in on the pick. Like a lot of you guys, I really don't like the move, particularly at #20. As MJL, we're not really qualified to say if Laughton will be better or worse than Maata or Finn or anyone else. But lots of other scouts had him ranked much lower, so that needs to factor in as well.

Also, a lot of people seem to be given Homer the benefit of the doubt because of previous draft success in the first round. I agree to some extent. But playing devil's advocate for a second, let's look at that (including time as understudy to Clark)

2011 Couturier - Awesome pick. Almost impossible not to take there, but he gets an A there.

2010 / 2009 - No picks

2008 Sbisa - Seems to be a decent pick. Coulda had Eberle, Ennis, Carlson but a better than a bunch of other guys drafted after.

2007 JVR - Jury still out, but was definitely ranked in top 3. I personally wanted Couture or Turris (.500 batting average). JVR will likely be 5-10 best player in that draft.

2006 G - Obviously the pick that earned the reputation.

2005 Downie - OK player. A "Flyers" player. I think he was a reach tho given his background. Not too many good players picked later, though coulda had Neal or Stasny.

2004 - no pick

2003 - Carter/Richards - Again, another draft that made their bones so to speak. But really, it was almost impossible to not screw up in the 1st round in 2003. And I'd argue that Carter was an ok pick (coulda had Parisi, Getzlaff, Brown, etc) and Richards was pretty good value there.

My point is...they have done ok in last 10 years, but are really not prospect whisperers either.

Howson looks like he's so afraid of getting taken in dealing Nash while asking & staying on his stance for the moon for the guy.

Seems Anaheim is doing the same, really, JVR, AND Schenn or Courturier????

I can see JVR not being enough (obviously), but doesn't he have to move the guy?
He wants out. (Nash I mean)

Exactly, so drafting this kid, and taking a Goalie who can play now. Doesn't make Howson an idiot.
