I don't think they r done. They just opened the door for ryan - griouxmvp2012
But traded the player they could have moved for him. Not sure how they get him now without trading Schenn or Couturier. Which I would hate to do.
If Homer could pull off acquiring Ryan without trading Schenn/Couturier... I would me amazed! |

what's his offensive ability like? does he have the potential to be a viable threat from the point? in your opinion of course. I'd like to get some leafs fan perspective on this. - JoeRussomanno
He'll never be an offensive dman, but he moves the puck well and can shoot. Keep in mind his confidence was totally shot bein on a team in a death spiral at the end of this season.

Luke still has huge upside as a beast defenseman. I think his outlet passes are totally overlooked as well. Flyers fans will be very pleasantly surprised I think - Zezel
I sure hope so. Never thought this would be a straight up trade. They says the team that gets the better player wins the trade most of the time, and the Leafs got the better player in this deal by a pretty big margin, imo.
Overall, I've approved of the vast majority of the moves Holmgren has made. This one has me scratching my head a bit. I know we wanted to sure up the D. Just thought we could get more than Schenn for JVR. Maybe not... |

Yea I mean you can't tell me that Schenn isn't more of a sure thing than any of those kids that got drafted last night. He's played in the league 3 years already and made an impact, we don't know if any of them will ever see a minute of NHL ice time. - JoeRussomanno
That is certainly true Joe. The type of player that Schenn is certainly sounded like the description of some of the D men that some people wanted the Flyers to take. Such as Maata.

IF you're saying he'll never be Paul Coffey I get that but are you saying he'll have an offensive impact or no? Puck moving ability with a shot translates to that I would think. |

be kind of weird if the Flyers got the Schenn brothers together for a few days only to turn around and trade one.

They in all likeliehood got the better player BUT the Flyers filled a need so, that kind of evens it out. |

I'm gunna go ahead and continue to bang the drum regarding a re-signing of Voracek and holding onto JvR. Happy they're both still w/ Philadelphia. - Pixote Andolini

I gotta say I'm not a fan of this move at all.
Also The Flyers and Holmgren are really starting a horrible trend in trading away players signed to extensions - just as their extension deals kick in. |

I feel that JVR has a much higher potential to be an impact player then Schenn does. - MJL
Could be wrong, but it seems to me over the last year or so, drafting, free agency and trading, (excluding the carter and richards deals) Holmgren has leaned toward proven commodities. Schenn is far from a proven commodity as he is still young. Although he has a lower potential ceiling than JvR. He is a steady and to this point non injury prone defenseman who at the worst will be a middle of the road 3-5 physical defenseman and at the best a shutdown D. JvR with the higher ceiling but with his injuries has a much further downside. Look at the Talbot and Jagr signings. Then even the last two first round picks. Great defensive forwards that are going to be solid NHL players at the least. Maybe not superstars but almost locks to have a positive impact. Idk just a trend I have seen from Holmgren since the beginning of last off season. He already has his top end talent in Giroux and Schenn, now he is building solid players around them. Thoughts? |

That is a fair statement no doubt maybe 5 years from now JVR is the next LeClair.
Then again maybe LS meets his potential also .
That's the thing about potential until though both players could have already reached their ceiling. Lets say though through this move we have the cap space to sign Parise..
Their has to be move coming with the cap space they have avail.
Also I keep seeing this quote in various places, "Jvr went beast mode in the playoffs a few years ago" ..Lets be honest, he really didn't . He had 7 goals , 0 assists and was a minus 3 . Yes , he dominated one game which the Flyers lost anyway.
Neither player has established themselves as a top player yet and I just think its too early to really say much about this trade.

Horrible move IMO. JvR's upside seems a lot bigger than Schenn's. |

So the payoff for finishing with the worst record over the last 10 years is a potential # 4 d-man?

I am dying to have Bobby Ryan come play with Claude Giroux. I have wanted it since last years TDL when the rumors of Ryan being traded began and to hear him come out the past few days and say he wants to be traded and Philly is his ideal situation...
JUST GET IT DONE!!!!

I don't like that at all either. WE might have just got fleeced by this trade let's not compound it to be reunited with a hometown kid. |
