He's definitely not better than those guys but I think we are doing LS a BIG disservice to say he's reached his potential already.
Also I think they still add a piece on D and possibly another forward. - JoeRussomanno
Well, I just realized Luke is only 22, so he is much younger than the other guys I listed. And given that most generally feel it takes longer for a d-man to reach his potential than a forward, it does seam reasonable that Schenn could become more than a third pairing guy in the future. I sure as hell hope he does now that he's a Flyer.
I also hope this means we're done moving current roster forwards. I don't want to move anyone else unless Shea Weber is the return. |

So the Flyers just traded a # 2 overall draft pick, and a potential 30+ goal scorer for a player similar to Coburn or Grossmann? Sounds like a great trade. - PLindbergh31
I don't disagree with that. On paper, I'm not crazy about the deal. But I think there are going to be some other things done. And ultimately what matters is the team that is put on the ice. So let's not go off the deep end in negativity!

weren't you just telling us how terrible a pick he was a couple weeks ago? - JoeRussomanno
In comparison to # 2 picks in other drafts he's disappointed no question, but he's young and was just traded for pennies on the dollar. |

I can't remember where but I know someone said he could be another Scott Stevens and if he becomes that, I don't care if JVR becomes Rocket Richard and I think everyone knows I'm a pretty big JVR supporter. |

Joe, I would not put his potential that high. That's a big stretch in my opinion.

Well schenn was a high pick too and I think he's got tons of room to grow. If he doesn't progress than yes, this a blunder. IF anything, a risky move by Homer no doubt. |

What is more likely to happen, JVR becoming a power forward with 30+ goal potential, or L. Schenn becoming a first pairing defenseman? |

I don't know tho, 270 hits playing limited minutes and only 22 years old, that kid has something going for him, that's for sure. |

Bill Meltzer @billmeltzer
A positive on L. Schenn: Leafs got the usual young D growing pain period. Many D do better in their SECOND org and think it'll be the same. - JoeRussomanno
Thank You! I was waiting to hear from the man! (I did not scour the whole thread, so sorry if he already commented.)
Only 22 years old, plenty of time to improve.
By the way, speaking of the first initial / last name thing.
Aren't the different NUMBERS enough? Why the need for that first stupid initial? |

I think that it is more likely that JVR scores 30 goals. Look, I would not have made this deal. But again, I'll stress to you, wait and see what else happens. And what other moves are made. Or you can go off the deep end with negativity. It's your choice.

Listen, I think your premise is correct. Schenn is a nice young defenseman. But if were talking about learning something about Hockey. I hope your not comparing Schenn to Doughty. - MJL
Hell no to comparing Schenn to Doughty.
What im saying is, ALOT of fans were fed up with JVR, the. When home trades him they say they couldve got more. No actually, we couldnt have. Schenn will be a great player for us. I have all the faith in the world.
AND, AND people forget how stacked we are at FW. Thats what baffles me. Jvr Was slated on the 4th line going intonext year.
Christ, watch us sign Suter and people complain we overpaid. Watch us trade for Ryan and people complain!!!
Just no pleasing Flyer fans, thats all. Just remember what happned lat year. NOBODY was ok with those trades, and look what happened! Homer isnt an idiot, and people tht say we got fleeced/Homer is stupid, look in the mirror bud. |

What will really take the cake is if Holmgren re-signs old man Jagr. |

Kid is a little more physical than Coburn. 270hits I've seen Coburn let up on hits. Grossman was great for us last year. |

Yes, he brings a real physical mean streak to him. But Scott Stevens is a Hall of Famer.

I liked the trades and don't miss those two, but if this team doesn't win a cup in 5 years, then that day last year is gonna be another black eye in Flyer history. |

Um, JVR was not slated to be on the 4th line next year. Actually a lot of people were okay with the Carter and Richards trades.

By doing far more then just being physical.

I can't see 1 possible positive way to trade for Ryan now. Voracek, Cousins, and a second? Read, Cousins, and a 1st? Read, 2nd, Rights to Carle? Nothing there is good. Trading a forward puts Flyers down 1 forward and I don't care for the other moves. I do like Schenn, but not for JVR straight up. Sigh. |

Okay and I think there's time and potential for Schenn to improve the other dimensions of his game. If he adds things to his toolbox like Stevens did, then yea imo at least, he could be that caliber of player. I don't think at 22 years old the book is written on Luke Schenn. |

Never heard anyone say he was the second coming of Scott Stevens - that seems like a stretch. Yes, I too would be thrilled if that happens but I think that's setting the bar a bit high.
I also don't think JVR will ever be Rocket Richard. I think he'll be a solid top-6 forward. I just hope he doesn't "LeClair" and turn into a flat out stud for another team. |
