Now, here's the issue: His speed really, really sucked this year. He spent all summer bulking up, didn't focus on his skating, and wound up losing all his speed... and he wasn't fast to begin with. He saw less and less ice time, got paired with another young d-man that left him out to dry many nights, and completely lost his confidence.
Hopefully, he'll rebound... he needs to focus first on getting his skating back in a big way, and needs the coach to show some confidence in him... If he starts off poorly again... it won't go too well for him. I think this is the reason Toronto decided it was time to cut the cord. I would have loved to keep him, and see what he could do in a defensive system(Wilson's run-and-gun really exposed his lack of speed), and with our new skating coach... but we won't get to see now.
The other thing to note: when he's struggling defensively, he'll try harder offensively... and that's not really a good thing. - Feeling Glucky?
Thanks for the insights.
Sounds like we need to hook him up with the same lady that taught Hartnell how to stay upright.
This trade doesn't sit well with me because luke schenn isn't going to be a top dman in the nhl. He won't be anything near doughty or weber and I was under the assumption we wanted that. Jvr. Is going to be a solid young power forward and I feel the leads won that deal. Won this deal.(
Not comparing to Pronger, just replying to poster about possibility whether Prongs will have an affect on Schenn's development. Sorry for the confusion

How can you arbitrarily award that one guy will be good and the other one won't?

what's his offensive ability like? does he have the potential to be a viable threat from the point? in your opinion of course. I'd like to get some leafs fan perspective on this. - JoeRussomanno

JVR isn't a physical player... Burke himself says he doesn't see him as a powerforward with the Leafs, just a skilled player with size.
Could be her. I don't recall for sure but the name sounds familiar. She did wonders for Hartnell. Should be good for you guys. - BringBack25
yea, it's her, I checked... She's actually the reason I had high hopes for Schenn next year... he needed the most help with skating... It almost looked like a signing just for him.

a lot of people saying the flyers should have gotten more, etc.
something to consider is the long-standing relationship/friendship burke and holmger have going back to hartford, iirc. they've done work together on team usa as well. he said they began talking about the deal early in the season but tabled it. this could and probably is a case of 2 friends trying to help each other out, and thinking they're just getting fair value without trying to bend the other one over.
honestly, is a straight up #2 for #5 swap such a big deal? what has jvr really done that warrants the flyers getting more back? had 1 good playoff series 2 years ago? both guys needed a change. flyers save some money, and get a good young dman (who happens to be rh'ed!). i wouldn't underestimate how much having his brother around could boost his comfort level and ultimately his game. that goes the other way too. the kid is 22 (frank)ing years old for (frank)'s sake. let's see what he's got.

Luke Schenn is only 22 years old. Defenseman usually take more time to develop. The kid has potential to be very good.

Well we just extended Coburn this year too I guess he's a goner now since we need that lady back
Not for nothing, but what has JVR done to deserve a kings ransom coming back for him. If you talk about potential than shouldn't that be discussed about Schenn? I liked JVR but in all honesty he didn't exactly light it up. Burke also isn't stupid that he'd give up a ton for a guy that has frankly been off more than on.

Who are you to say that? Schenn was touted just a year ago as a great up and coming young d-man, and then he had a bad year and now he isn't gonna be a great player? - Flyers2821
Luke will be a good shut down guy... people saying he sucks are just like talking crap. He has had 2 bad seasons but when he played well, he was Toronto's top Dman. He is a loyal team mate as well... sticks up for his team mates and will fight just about anyone. He will fit in Philly perfectly and the fans will love him.
Both of these players have falling way short of expectations. Def have to think Holmes has long term injury concerns with jvr. Not happy about the deal. My god Luke needs some serious refinement
