Strengthen one area, weakened another - MJL
Offense was not an issue for this team imo. They get a physical defenseman and a player who blocks a ton of shots. He can also move the puck and hes a young kid with experience. Homer has more moves coming. |

Remember the Detroit theory that we followed?
Stock up on D. & use a crappy goalie. (Leighton)
We had Kimmo.(for another year), Mez. Coburn. Grossmann. & possibly Carle staying, I thought we were ok (if we sign carle) as again, now we're paying $5 million to a top goalie, do we require spending more $ on D?
This surely means Carle is gone so "did we improve out team"? Same as last summer, I don't think anyone really knows
Does our up and down style fit Schenn's stay at home style? - puckhead17
You think Carle is not coming back?

Don't disagree. Was simply stating why I believe some fans are not happy with the deal.
Then you also have the crowd that thinks since JVR hasn't been Patrick Kane 2.0 he's a failure and sucks. So they're thrilled I would imagine.
Lastly, I think the aspect to this that nobody is considering is the impact this deal could have on re-signing Matt Carle. With JVR gone, if Carle re-signs he would be the sole whipping boy without JVR there to share that duty. One could reasonably expect him to demand more money to offset the pain and suffering the Flyers largely irrational and hockey-illiterate fan base can dole out over the course of a season. This could be a serious impediment to any new deal. - BringBack25
I believe that Carle will be signed July 1st. |

Doesn't mean they didn't weaken the forward ranks by trading JVR.

They'll trade up into the top 5 maybe even top 3 to draft Ottawa 67's forward Sean Monahan in the 2013 entry draft.

Schenn is an upgrade to what the Flyers previously had. JvR basically didnt play last season and this team was still in the Top 2 in scoring. Schenn is a big defenseman whos physical and blocks a ton of shots. Hes still a young kid and the Flyers defense looks better with him on it. |

Seriously?? Now??
No, with what $$? We have a top notch $5 million a year goalie, why would we need another defenseman?
Kimmo $6.3
Coburn $4.5
Mez $4
Grossmann $3.5
Schenn $3.6
Carle $4.8??????
$32 million or so behind your blue line? |

JvR didnt play last year and this team still produced offensively. They need to upgrade the defense and they did today. Physical yound kid who blocks shots and can move the puck. |

Very good choice sir.
Sadly he's in the WHL & I'm not flying to Portland to see him play. I've seen Sean Monahan already & is easier with a 7 hour drive.
Plus we don't draft d-men that high & we'll need to replace the lost JVR scoring. |

Yes, seriously. Because you need a blend of defenseman, and the right mix. And you need that puck moving offensive defenseman. All signs point to Carle being re-signed.

You paying a number 6 D man $3.5 million to play 10 minutes a night?
We need to reup voracek as well as maybe a piece or 2 here and there.
That's a lot of $$$ for defensemen while paying a "great" goalie |

The Flyers have a lot of young forwards looking to expand their roles next year. The defense is priority #1 during the offseason. Homer has upgraded that area by adding Schenn. Not saying they didnt weaken the offense but they still produced without JvR this year. |

Just a guess but they'd probably like to spread the minutes out as often as possible. Plus we don't have when Kimmo will be good to go from his off-season surgeries I'd imagine they will not rush him to make the season opener. |

Whos to say they dont resign Carle and move another defenseman out? The Flyers have plenty of money to bring Carle back. I actually hope they keep all the defenseman. Helps to limit all the defenseman minutes when your that balanced. |

Who says Schenn is going to play 10 minutes a night. Cap space isn't an issue. There is also a chance that Timonen isn't ready to start the Season.

Even having Kimmo for one more year still that seems a little D heavy if they keep Carle. I would like 5 top D men and maybe trying for an upgrade at right wing instead (for Giroux's line) |

Here's an interesting whacked out of left field thought. Nashville would want a good young defenseman as part of the return for a deal for Weber! |

They can still get that upgrade with the 6 D men.
