Another bad pick by the Flyers huh? I like to know just how the Flyers are intimidated. - MJL
I think they might default to the forward if it's close because of their record... |

I think it's exactly what those who have insight into the Flyers Draft strategy say it is. They take the best player available in their eyes. |

You can't just pick the player immediately after. That is too small a sample size, ignores team needs, and ignores the "Howson" effect. Go with 10 after, or even 5 after. That is much more representative as those players should generally be comparables in scouting reports. - TheGreat28

This is Hockey, not Stocks. - MJLAnd opportunity cost has nothing to do with it. Just because Parise was available, doesn't make Carter a so so pick.
Sorry, but I completely disagree with that statement. Drafting in any sport factors in opportunity cost. |

it sucks that the flyers and pens would likely not be inclined to trade with one another, as each seems to have the philosophy of monopolizing one area of their team to trade for the other. some flyers forward prospects would look nice for some pens d prospects, if the teams werent who they were |

I'm not getting this draft for the flyers at all. Laughton ok i"m with them on that pick but a goalie and a wood nymph sized d man. I hope they know what they are doing.
Hope they aren't drafting to fill their ECHL affiliate. |

Well if the past is any reflection on the future then Laughton will be decent, but the rest will be marginal at best. Seems a bit of a reach for the other two. |

For example, the opportunity cost of drafting Derek Mathers last year is Hyka. |

But you aren't quantifying whether, even including a factor of "opportunity cost", the Flyers aren't one of the better drafting teams or not. |

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I meant to say you can't just compare the player picked after those 5, as Tomahawk did. You need to use the next 5-10 players and compare those to our picks. |

Isn't it kind of hard to judge these picks right off the bat? Not even considering the fact that most of us haven't even seen these guys play (and that the Flyers have a staff of guys who get paid to do only that), drafted players aren't expected to make an impact for a few years anyway. And even then, a lot of the picks won't make any significant impact. Pierre might think that every pick is a future hall of famer, but it's rare for drafts to produce talent like the one in 2003.
Let's relax. Trust the Flyers, and wait for things to develop. If in 3-4 years, none of these guys pan out? Great. That's about what you have to expect anyway. It's also not that bad when you consider that the Flyers generally draft well, so an off year is to bound to happen. And we're still pretty stocked with quality young players that are producing now.
And we also didn't just trade a shutdown center who could be capable of scoring 30, along with a top 4 defenseman for picks and prospects that MIGHT be able to produce at some point in the future. But the Penguins are immediately better right? Stanley Cup favorites again. Worked so well last year. |

Drafting in sports figures in a lot of things. It isn't economics. Just because in hindsight another player that was available turns out to be a better player, doesn't make a pick a bad pick, or a so so pick, as you said. Carter wasn't a so so pick. It was a very good choice. What determines how good a pick is, is how that player turns out.

This draft has certainly been far from conventional. None of these picks on the surface make any sense at all. |

I agree but I still find it strange that some people in the know don't really have a lot of info on the last few picks.

I think the Flyers are in the top 10 in first round, and then bottom quarter of all teams after the first round. |

My point is...they have done ok in last 10 years, but are really not prospect whisperers either. - TheGreat28
Flyers have done pretty well drafting forwards toward the back of the first round (Gagne, Williams, Richards, Downie, Giroux were all 20+, Carter was 14 and Zubrus 15). As Bill said, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. |
