I'm very content with what the Flyers did. Sure Shero made his big splashes, but what good are they if he doesn't get top FAs? Some of that new shiny cap room will go to Crosby & Malkin.
The Flyers were obviously kicking tires. But the costs were too high. We're not talking about a GM who shies away from big cost trades. That means the prices for Nash, Ryan et al. Were likely to expexpensive right now. They can make deals later.
As for the pick, remember when the Flyers missed out on Sanguinetti? Homer gets benefit of doubt from me on Laughton over Mnot aatta and Finn - Jsaquella
Not crazy about our selection but even less understanding the need for a rick nash or bobby ryan. Weber or nothing when it comes to jvr. |

I agree but I still find it strange that some people in the know don't really have a lot of info on the last few picks. - Duran76
Yep. But it's like Bill said. Some people in the know see things that other guys in the know don't. The Flyers obviously think the guys they picked have potential. I don't know the first thing about scouting/drafting/developing players, so I'm going to have to agree with them. If they picked Loughton in the top 10? Yeah, that might be an issue. But at 20, there are no guarantees anyway. |

I'd rather have Carle and Schenn, then Yandle.

Drafting in sports figures in a lot of things. It isn't economics. Just because in hindsight another player that was available turns out to be a better player, doesn't make a pick a bad pick, or a so so pick, as you said. Carter wasn't a so so pick. It was a very good choice. What determines how good a pick is, is how that player turns out. - MJL
I think you are hanging too much on the words "so so". I agreed that it was an understatement. It was a good pick. My point is more that you have to discount the 2003 draft a little bit when you analyze every GM's ability to draft, except maybe the few who really screwed the pooch.
At the end of the day I am not saying that Holmgren is a bad judge of talent. I just don't think he is immune to second guessing either. |

As of right now, I'd say the odds are very good. But that can change. For example, in my opinion. If the Flyers were to trade for Yandle. I would not re-sign Carle.

FREDRIK LARSSON - ob18
People on twitter can't seem to agree on his position. Panotch isn't sure if he's a D or a winger. D leed said goalie.
Edit
Evidently there seems to be some confusion over which Fred Larsson was selected. Must be like John Smith in Sweden. |

I don't see why you would discount the 2003 draft. Regardless of how much talent was available. GM's still had to make a choice.

i definitely hope carle is resigned...
if trading for yandle also meant no carle then it's definitely not even close to worth it |

Flyers have done pretty well drafting forwards toward the back of the first round (Gagne, Williams, Richards, Downie, Giroux were all 20+, Carter was 14 and Zubrus 15). As Bill said, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt on this one. - BringBack25
Gagne, Zubrus, and Williams pre-dated Holmgren's time, so I excluded them. Carter was 11th.

Fredrik Larsson sounds like the Swedish version of Mike Smith. There's probably 5 of them in the draft |

I think I'd prefer Carle at the reported ($4.75 mill a year?) or whatever the figure they were speaking of.
really, Kimmo for another year, Carle, Coburn, Mez & Grossmann I think is good enough as your top 5. & maybe next year look at Enstrom as a Kimmo replacement.
I only "shake" things really heavy if I have a chance at Weber. |
