Absolutely. Briere is but one player on a team. And I'm sure you don't get excited and thank God when Briere pumps in a big goal in a playoff game. I'm sure you say, we don't need that. - MJL
My biggest gripe with him are his numerous stick infractions. I understand he's at a size disadvantage but I'd like to see him cut those down. |

And also the entire team to cut down on penalties. |

Yeah, but I think that is one way he gets space. Its kind of a necessary evil.
But griping about Brieres defense is kind of like complaining that a sports car doesn't get good gas mileage. You may as well complain that he doesn't fight enough.

It could do well for him. - ob18
I think it motivates him. How long it lasts is what I'm not sure of. Hopefully he has a good career. Its a shame he didn't have enough time to get it together here, but if Schenn turns into a great player then it was worth it. Just still not sure what to think until the team is fully put together. |

I'm not singling him out, just commented on him since he was being discussed.
Edit: just clarifying, not assuming you thought that |

If he can cut down the penalties, that's a positive. His defense is what it is. Not every player is going to be a selke candidate. Can he be better? Probably, but its not ever going to be a strength of his. |

I don't mind the JVR deal, just thought, as others have mentioned, we would have gotten a 3rd or 4rth round pick back also. Any additional asset would have helped. That said, JVR's injury history may have played a part in the trade being a one for one.
Going forward, my personal preference would be to sign Schultz (another right handed shot), let Carle go in UFA and go for Parise. They will have this week to find out if this is possible as they can talk to, but not sign,Schultz.
D pairings of
Timonen/Coburn
Meszaros/Schenn
Schultz/Grossman
Effectively, we'd be changing out JVR/Carle for Schenn/Shultz/Parise
If you end up going after Ryan, I would be willing to do Jake. the rights to Carle and next year's 1rst, assuming you knew you could sign Schultz. If that happened, then I would resign Jagr. - GeorgeBailey
I'm doubting Schenn and Meszaros get paired at any point (If Meszaros is still here). Meszaros doesn't play the left side. |

How is he defensively? - PootieTang
See blog. It's probably the weakest area of his game right now -- the only reservation Toronto should have about playing him at center. Needs to be more consistent in using his size effectively, too (not necessarily referring to hitting game, just in terms of getting to the net and being harder on the puck). But D is the #1 area in need of improvement, IMO.

I think people are underrating Voracek's potential. |

So are the Ducks if they aren't willing to take him in return for Ryan |

I won't lie. I am a little down on Jake Voracek and I don't think the Flyers are through the moon over him either. it's not his play on the ice, it's having to re-sign him so soon after his last contract signing. The Flyers had a little trouble signing him one year ago and it's sounding like the Flyers might be having the same issues. Voracek had a very good season but it's not even his best of his 4 seasons in the NHL. Already this guy wants a 3rd raise. |

I just did some number crunching. And my calculations put the Flyers Off Season Cap number currently at $64,324,224. - MJL
Well that puts them at $5.5 mil in cap space, for all intents and purposes.
We have to squeeze Czech and Carle in for sure.
Can we even do that?? Ugh.
There goes Parise |

Not saying I would do it but I can see Homer calling Anaheim and offering Voracek, Meszaros, and a 1st for Ryan.
I think Homer would be fine re-signing Carle and having Carle-Timonen, Coburn-Grossman, Schenn and a UFA with Lilja and Gustafsson
MAB could be traded in August for a future draft pick a la Powe.

I don't like this plan.
However, I'm not Homer. |

Yea I would rather re-sign Carle and look to add a forward in UFA. Just saying, I wouldnt be surprised if Homer made that offer

On paper, I don't really like Voracek with Giroux either. As both are more playmaker then shooter. Preferably you would want a goal scorer in that spot. I'm just not crazy about overpaying for somebody like Ryan. - MJL
You're right, but G and V should both shoot more. Anyone else notice how awesome G's one timers were in the playoffs. |

Just not at centre lol - PootieTang
I think putting him at center will be a disaster. Let the kid get comfortable, then confident, then cocky.
He is still so young it is my opinion he just needs time. |
