I agree, I've been a bit curious about this Justin Schultz kid for a while now. I don't doubt he's a talented soon-to-be rookie with plenty of potential, but without even one day of professional experience I feel like there's a lot of assumption going on with him. I've even heard him described as a 'stud' by some, how can we even say that yet? To me, he's still only an NHL-ready prospect, even in light of all the potential and the UFA hype. - BulliesPhan87
I've been curious but I wouldn't want the Flyers to sign Schultz. Let someone one else sign him and deal with potential headaches as the kid has to grow in the NHL. He wants top-4 minutes and hasn't played in the league yet. What if he has a rough streak and a team has to scratch him, how will he handle that? If I'm the Flyers and Homer, you sign Carle or a veteran UFA and make a run at Weber next year when Timonen's cap number is off the books.

i agree -- that's why I let Carle walk.
Grossmann - Coburn
Kimmo - Schenn
Meszaros - Gus - flyersfan51
I wanna keep Carle. I think he's apart of this teams future. |

If there is no cushion, Yes, for 1 game. Just like they did last year. Cause then he can not reach the 25 minutes in every game and by the 2nd day of the season his cap hit goes down. - RooNosHockey
I would be extremely surprised if that happens. |

I think we saw quite clearly the benefit of carrying extra defensemen through this past season. The seven and eight spots are going to be utilized, it's almost certain. - BulliesPhan87
Please stop making sense. This is the season to be lured by all the shiny possibilities of changing the roster. Thank you. |

So the offer they gave Voracek was 2.25 mill? They offered him no raise? - Flyers2821
That was all they were required to give for his Qualifying Offer. And that's just to retain his rights. |

I have problems all over with this post. First. We traded for 2 defensman at the deadline yes. Why? Because the guys we had were rookies. Now they have a year under thier belts. They also have added Grossmann and instead of having 2 rookies playing regularly and more if there was an injury, now you will only have 1 if there is an injury.
As for Ryan only scoring 8 more points. There is a big difference between someone that scores 15 more goals and someone that has the same amount of "points" Reason being... secondary assists. Ryan has had 30 or more goals in EVERY season he has played. That does not come along very often in players. Even our top paid player hasn't done that.
As for depleting our depth. We need to deplete our depth a little. Its starting to get over paid on defense, and while we have a lot of players that are up and coming and can contribute, it is a waist to pay them for limited minutes. It's like spreading butter too thin. I would rather use some of that depth that might not get enough time to play and use it on a guy that will be our #2 guy. Fill in the scoring depth to address the defensive need at forward.
Meszaros is a nice defenseman, but him and a late round pick IS WAY off base for Ryan. Meszaros was the most improved 2 years ago. He was not better then Pronger, or Timonen. And he had a slight herniated disc and floating bone chip. That is not a career ending injury.
Right now Ryan is a top line player and all-star in this league. He is still young enough that I can say I'm not sure he peaked, but even if he has and this is the best he gets, its still worth Voracek, and Meszaros if a 2nd or 3rd round pick comes back with him. - RooNosHockey
I agree with that trade -- you have to give a little bit more value if you're getting a star player back. |

Because the Flyers are so close to the Cap ceiling, you can't just go out and get another defensman before making a move. And I still dont see the need in making another move.
Timonen-Schenn
Coburn-Grossman
Carle-Bourdon
7th Lilja
Gus/Manning call up.
If Schenn or Bourdon can't handle being on a top 4 line, then they get depoted to 3rd pair, or sit in favor of Lilja for a few. If major injuries arise during the season, you address it then with trades. - RooNosHockey
The Flyers absolutely could add another defenseman before making a move. Plenty of space to do so. |

He is so overrated by Flyers fans it's not even funny. You would think he was the next Claude Giroux with the way Flyers fans talk about him - Flyers2821
I'm starting to agree with you here. This is a guy people did not want before we traded for him. I will say i like Voracek, but I dont see him being much more then a supporting winger on a second line. A more talented version of what Ville Leino did for us. |

I'm all for signing the kid, personally. It can't hurt to get a high profile prospect in the organization, and I don't think it hinders the pursuit of other blueliners. With his expectations, though, he won't be choosing us. |

Traded. For Ryan, or whatever have you. Seriously right now your 3rd pairing is making a combined 7.1 million.... You cant have that. Just like you need some value forwards like Read, Couturier, etc... you need your value d-man to play as well. You need someone like Bourdon, Gus, or Lilja to make your cap more managable. - RooNosHockey
There is no problem with that this year, if they re-sign Carle and keep the others. Have to look at the future. Timonen's deal is up after this year. |

Those numbers put him in another class. That kind of production is going to cost big money at some point (if he hits them). |

I don't see him scoring 30 more points than he did this year. He may improve, but that is asking for a lot.

- Harry Z, $900k, 37 games played
- Ben Holmstrom, $750k, 5 games played
- Tom Sestito, $550k, 5 games played
Others
- Gustafsson, 30 games
- Brandon Manning, 4 games
Also need to keep in mind that the following players are on two-way deals so they only account for the amount of days they were on the roster last season...
- Schenn, 3.11m, 54 games (pretty sure his cap hit was much less cause he started in AHL)
- Couturiere, 1.375m, 77 games
- Wellwood, 580k, 24 games
- Rinaldo, 545k, 66 games
***Everything is based off of days, NOT games. So to do the calculation is nearly impossible. - Flyers2821
The Calculations aren't impossible. It's relatively simple. The information of how many days a player spent on the roster is available at Capgeek.
For example, Schenn spent 165 days on the Flyers roster last year. Last the Season was 185 days. So the calculation is
$3,110,000/185 x 165 = 2,773,783. That is the Off Season Cap hit for Brayden Schenn

I actually like the deal a lot. I think Schenn is going to be very good here. He is big and physical, blocks shots, and can move the puck, and right handed shot. About time. |

The most I'd personally deal is Jake, Meszy, and a 2nd for Ryan. Not dealing a 1st round pick in a deep class on top of those two players. |

You do realize he only registered 8 points less than Ryan right? Also he's three years younger. Right about the age when Ryan went on a tear. Simmonds a year older took giant step form this past season to what he was a year before. Not saying Jake will do the same but it's something to consider. - JoeRussomanno
A secondary assist is not worth the same weight as a goal. You say 8 less points... My question is how many of those assists were secondary assists. Goals have a lot more weight when your trying to compair a player by overall points.... |
