We do need a forward now that Jagr is a FA and JVR is gone, and we do have 9 NHL dmen (if Carle resigns as planned)
I suggested Mueller or Latendresse. Id like Latendresse because he's a huge body who can also score. Hell, Ill take both. Both are still fairly young, will come cheap and on short term deals. Yeah, yeah, I know. Injuries. It's not like they are major players here though. Our offense is set before they're even added. They'd be complimentary guys here.
I'm stating now I want nothing to do with Bobby Ryan, because I dont think that's what this team needs right now. At this point, we need to resign Carle and Jake, a back-up goalie, and 1 forward, preferably a bigger body for the bottom six.
Watch the ball homer, the pitchers throwing non-sense. Take the walk. Hit your homerun next year when theres a different guy on the mound who's throwing meatballs at you. - mochoson

he's been playing with Getzlaf and Perry.....they aren't slouches...
Also, if you put Voracek with Giroux, he'd score 30 I think. - flyersfan51
No they're both awesome players. But Ryan would put more heart and soul into a Flyers uniform more so than a Ducks uniform. And Getzlaf is great but Giroux is the best passer in the NHL right now, IMO. |

Just because Holmgren keeps saying he is confident they are going to re-sign Carle does not mean anything. Since when did we take Holmgren for his word? Him coming out and saying he is confident they are going to re-sign Carle actually implies to me that they are not going to re-sign him. - Flyers2821
Which is why I mentioned that
That still gives us 8 NHL dmen, in which case I really dont want one traded out to get someone like Ryan |

The defenseman were not a problem last year as much as team defense was, and we were fighting injuries all year. Coburn, Meszaros, Timonen... If there is an injury, you move the 5th d-man (Grossman, Coburn, Carle, Schenn) whoever that 5th guy is up to the 4th spot and yes you play a lilja in limited time and limited situations. All teams do that. You can't just have all your defensman making 4 million plus in a cap world.
Do we need a Ryan? No. But if your going to pay Voracek 3.5 and Ryan is only 2 million more and can score a minimum 15 more goals a year.... I want my money to be spent on top line players. Not guys making 3.5 million that might play 2nd or 3rd line. - RooNosHockey

Your statements are just as vague as his are. Getzlaf and Perry are good players, but they are more shoot first then Giroux is, and nowhere near as gifted at passing. Plus Ryan only recently spent time with those 2. His first few seasons were spent on a 2nd line.
Secondly I doubt Voracek would score 30 with Giroux. Voracek is a pass first guy, just like Giroux. They both operate with the puck. It would not be a good idea to play those 2 together.
I think the best line for Giroux is the formula you had last year. A guy like Jagr that creates space and draws coverage, Giroux a guy that can get the puck to anyone on the ice in the right spot at the right time, and a Hartnell someone that can put the puck in the net and get into the right position.
I think Ryan, or Nash for that matter would be able fill both what Jagr and Hartnell did last year. They have the talent to create space for others on the line, and the talent to score when they get the puck. I dont think Voracek would help on that line at all. |

The defensemen were a problem. SO much so that Homer had to go out and get two of them at the deadline. If you don't need Ryan then there's no sense in getting him at the cost of shedding a defenseman and a 2nd or 3rd line winger for 15 more goals a year, even if that's how much more it would be which none of us even knows. What we do know is he got 8 or 9 points more than the one forward we are willing to trade.
All this Bobby Ryan trade really does is deplete the needed depth we need. Every year the Flyers are depleted do to injury. Not for lack of goal scoring. IF team defense was an even bigger problem than the actual defenseman why deplete your roster of players who contribute to the solution? You want Bobby Ryan, fine but don't overpay. He's not worth more than Mezaros and maybe a late round draft pick. Mezaros is a dynamic defenseman, who battled back from what should have been a season maybe career ending injury. On top of that he was our best defenseman last year with names like Timonen and Pronger playing. As for Coburn, I'd say he was our best defenseman this year, either one of those guys should be enough for Ryan otherwise you're overpaying.
Please a first round pick, look at the players we've found with late first round picks.... |

What's up with Latendresse playing so few games the last couple seasons? Last time I'd heard his name he was in the midst of a reversal of fortunate after being traded from the Habs.
Also, I agree with the things you are saying. That is, unless there's a way to get a Weber or a Seabrooke without losing 28 or 14. |

I disagree on the Voracek point. I think Voracek could be just as succesful on Girouxs wing as Jagr.
Getzlaf isn't really a shooter btw. Why I dont know, cause he's got a (frank)ing cannon. |

Team defense is an issue. The question is how do they fix it? The Flyers played with a lot of young guys last season so you would hope they improve in that area. I think adding Schenn will be huge for this team because of his physical play and shot blocking ability (plus RH shot). |

Pretty much everyone that has any connections with the team are sure there is already a deal in place and they are just waiting for July 1 tagging space to sign it. So its not just Homer, but Carle, his agent... etc.. |
