I would rather not. Signing Carle is an overpayment that comes with a NTC - stveshdy
I want them to keep Mez.
Would like Carle at $5M tops, otherwise go with a cheaper defense and make a run at a top guy next season. |

Mez is a much more dynamic player and before last year showed signs of taking his game to the next level. I want to keep him too. |

The problem is that mistakes aren't mistakes just because a fan labels them a mistake. For example, signing Lilja to a 2 year deal was not a mistake. It was a good value signing. And that was proven last Season. And there's no reason Lilja can't fill the same role this year. There is also a lot of a lack of understanding of the NHL CBA and Salary Cap out there. - MJL
I'd say the pronger contract being labeled initially as an under-35 deal is as collosal* an F'up as an org can make. kinda effects your contingency planning.
in general, homers cap mgmt has limited his options. of course, if they drafted better at some other positions, he'd have a lot more leeway. all of these aspects of the job are interrelated.
edit- I have to retract that, because it's not an accurate read. |

Ridiculously overblown. Whether the Flyers thought it was a 35+ contract or not, wouldn't have changed anything. They made the trade and would've still re-signed the player regardless. A mountain made out of a mole hill by some of the fan base.

What does that "collosal F'up" mean in the real world here though? That he can't retire and come off the cap? He was never going to just up and retire anyways. He'll sit on LTIR until the contract is up. Whether it was an under or over 35 contract, the result to the cap is the same. |

That collasal f up almost won us a cup in 2010. I don't jinks anyone would be complaining about prongers contract had they won. It was a risk/reward decision to sign him to a long deal that his age and it almost paid off. |

It meant nothing really. So if the Flyers knew for sure that it was going to be a 35+ contract, they wouldn't have re-signed him?

you're right...colossal is inappropriate to describe that error. they were going to sign him anyway. of course, the flyers are currently suffering the effects. |

I mentioned the other day how as much as I loved that they got Pronger, it's almost regretful that they did. |

Due to the player taking a stick to the eye, which can happen to any player. And not due a poor decision the Flyers made.
I like the fact that the Flyers aren't going to hesitate to make a move if it's one they think get's them closer to a Cup, even if there is potential issues in doing so down the line. |

Exactly. And Pronger's accident wasn't exactly forseeable. It's not like he had a chronic knee issue, or concussion issues. He took a stick to the eye, tried to play through it down the line, and developed sincere concussion issues. Sucks that the medical staff didn't/couldn't pick up on it, but that's how it goes sometimes.
I think I'd make that trade everyday, even knowing where Pronger would've ended up during the 2011-2012 season. It was still worth it. |

I didn't like the deal at the time because I wanted to stay the course and only exchange young assets. but, for want of decent goaltending, we'd have won a cup. |

I wonder if the hanzal hit was every bit of a factor if not more...but we'll never know and it doesn't really matter. |
