you're right...colossal is inappropriate to describe that error. they were going to sign him anyway. of course, the flyers are currently suffering the effects.

I wouldn't call it a colossal eff up but no one can ever convince me they expected him to play the last year or 2 at 42 when he signed it. and the very fact that they made reference to it not being a 35 and over contract tells me they messed up. Honestly the way its worded in the CBA is a bit clouded.

I didn't like the deal at the time because I wanted to stay the course and only exchange young assets. but, for want of decent goaltending, we'd have won a cup.

Exactly. And Pronger's accident wasn't exactly forseeable. It's not like he had a chronic knee issue, or concussion issues. He took a stick to the eye, tried to play through it down the line, and developed sincere concussion issues. Sucks that the medical staff didn't/couldn't pick up on it, but that's how it goes sometimes.

I think I'd make that trade everyday, even knowing where Pronger would've ended up during the 2011-2012 season. It was still worth it.
