Could you please clarify for me the reason why the NHL employs the IR system? I'm quite perplexed by this if good players play through the pain...why even need an IR? Just make them play.

Sorry wouldn't call Raycroft unproven, he was Rookie of the year the season before we traded for him...and he ended up tying the Leafs record for most wins in a season prev held by Belfour...but I do get your point on risk

Why is this even a topic really? There's no way that Brodeur wants to spend his last couple seasons playing for a team that can't make the playoffs. Unless we paid him a stupid amount of money he wouldn't be coming. So don't really need to build a case of why the Leafs wouldn't go after Brodeur.
