I'm concerned about it. But I'm more concerned about paying 6M or more for a player who isn't worth that contract. - MJL
Salaries/cap hits are going up, but so is the upper limit.
$6 million next season is not the same as $6 million one or two seasons ago. |

There's only a small collection of defenders past and present that can control a game to the point where they transcend the team-nature of the sport -- as good as he is, Suter isn't one of them. Weber is even debatable. With Lidstrom retired, the only dman that fits into that category fully is Chara with the way he dominates in his own zone.
Suter is a solid add in a vaccuum, but if it puts you in salary cap jail and you end up with holes elsewhere you can't fill, then you're not really better off as a team in the end. - Tomahawk
Valid points. Homer must feel that he is worth the money or he wouldnt offer this kind of cash. Suter is a legit defenseman. All Star caliber. There arent many defenseman like Weber or Chara in this league. Suter is the next best thing behind those types of players on defense. |

With the economy stalled, revenues won't be going up forever, especially with no new sweetheart TV deals on the horizon to boost the bottom line. Half the clubs are still essentially operating on a loss, and there's no shortage of clubs that would be insolvent without revenue sharing. Plus, the owners are looking to decrease players' share of revenue to as close to 50% as they can get it.
I would hesitate to say that the cap limit is going to go up much more in the near term. |

That's why you bank the money at go hard after Weber next season, assuming he doesn't sign long term this summer. |

No guarantee Weber becomes available. Right now Suter is available.
Flyers may not want to spend 10+M on a defenseman even if its Weber. |

It's gotta be Nashville, and then one of the rest. Detroit is probably still his preferred destination if he jumps ship, and they have the cap space and desperation to make it happen. |

I agree that the continued increase in the cap is likely to come to an end in the near future. But $6 million to a player in a $70 million cap is not the same as a $6 million player in a $54 million cap. Although, extending 12-year contracts in this financial climate is not too fiscally sound either. Thankfully, most of these GMs won't have to deal with the repercussions in a few years (they'll be fired by then). |

If he signs with Pittsburgh or Philly he immediately becomes a villain with Devils fans. Does he want to do that?
I think Detroit makes the most sense for him. |

Interesting. Funny how Zach called Dustin and let him know this.
"Dustin - I'm really torn between Pitt and Minnesota. What do you think? I can't decide. On the one hand, I get to play with my "friend", and I really like his family. On the other hand, I get to play near home".
