Assembling a paper champion in July has never been a problem for the Flyers. Having the flexibility in-season to fill needs and improve has always been a problem since they installed the salary cap. I see losing out on the premier UFA's as a blessing in disguise, like Homer tripping on a banana peel and dodging a bullet(s) as a result. The only worry now is that he doesn't overcompensate in the trade market. Otherwise, this team is set up pretty nicely, both lineup and salary wise. - Tomahawk
I keep reading about being glad the Flyers didn't overpay, and now they have Cap space to make a move later. And that's certainly true. But if you want to improve your team by adding a top player, whether you do it in the off season in Free Agency, or trade. Or an in season trade. Your going to overpay. The question is how much are you willing to overpay by. There's a reason that teams continue to overpay for players, in Free Agency. Because if you want to add those top players, you have no choice. So it's pay me now, or pay me later. So make no mistaked about it, if the Flyers make a big move, now or later. They will likely have to over pay. It's just a question of how much. |

ever hear of statistics, sir? - OrangeBlack27
Show me the stats.
Ryan has been 1 or 2 on the Ducks in on-ice goals for per 60 minutes and on-ice +/- per 60 minutes over the past 3 seasons. |

So you loathe advanced stats too?
This forum is to talk about potential moves/trades. It's unbelievable that everyone gets so vicious when someone merely mentions a possible trade proposal. |

I'd offer Jake, MAB, Cousins/Laughton, and a 2013 1st for Ryan. If that's rejected, then, well, it was nice talking to you Murray.
Signing Doan after that would be prudent as well, but as I've said, I don't see him leaving. He'd be a huge hit here if he were to sign that's for sure. - LordStanley88
Why would we give up all that loot?
Eskin reported it would take Read, Gus, and a 1st.
Eskin is very credible according to sources here. |

The Carle "fiasco" is really the first, and only time that the Walker and Shelley contracts bit the Flyers in the ass.
The only reason they did is, they prevented getting a deal signed, sealed and delivered before July 1st, because they took up tagging space.
But, so did the Grossmann contract.
I don't really see the Carle situation as a fiasco. Yes, he's a good player, and the Flyers would be a better team with him onboard at a $5mm cap hit than with Gervais and Gustafsson, but at the same time, the deal Carle got was too long for my liking, and the cap hit was the absolute most I would have considered paying.
As it is now, the Flyers have a solid team. They have lost fewer skilled players and certainly fewer key players than New Jersey and Pittsburgh. They still have cap space to make a couple of moves, too. - Jsaquella
Fiasco is a little to dramatic, bad choice of word(s).
I just think losing the ability of a Carle on the backend will hurt this teams transition game.
The Flyers need a puck moving D-man.

if you loathe advanced statistics, it would be a waste of time to go further.
i'll just say this, though re: your ryan trade proposal. i'm not sure if just voracek for ryan would be much more than a lateral move. |

So with Carle gone have we figured out who the new whipping boy will be for next season yet?
P.S. I'm not back reading today so the first person to chime in with a "Laught" gets a kick in the nuts. |

If so, this is good news. |

I don't understand why we speculate that Homer HAS to do something.
Is Homer a spaz? And impulse shopper? You're telling me JUST because he didn't get one of the top 2 free agents, he just HAS to go out and trade the whole team away just to "make a splash"??
The man is a GM in the NHL. He knows what he's doing, and he's good at it. I have full confidence Homer isn't going to trade just to "make noise". Hell- we say it to people that propose propsterous trades on here.... "What's the point of that proposal?? You're just tradong for the sake of trading..."
If us couch GMs wouldn't do it, I have full confidence the real one won't either.
In Homer I trust. |

Quite the contrary, I just used them as evidence in support of Ryan... |

See the first paragraph of the blog -- There is time and now plenty of cap space w/o Carle or Jagr this offseason to improve team.
But there is no way to spin the handling of Carle and ZP/RS (when it turned out Pittsburgh wasn't a serious consideration for either player) as anything but a pair of miscalculations on what they initially WANTED to do. - bmeltzer
I completely agree with your blog Bill. And I would also add the draft into the list of questionable decisions this offseason, though I believe you do not agree with that point.
But considering the cost of acquiring a top 3rd line shutdown center through trade or FA vs. the cost of acquiring even a 2nd pairing defensive dman, I really question the strategy of not drafting Maata / Thrower.

Per @jaeckel, Blackhawks may be shopping 21 y/o D Nick Leddy (37 points in 2nd NHL season) or defensively sound Niklas Hjalmarsson. - Rocktane
I don't find this credible. As I understand it, we are doomed and the Flyers will never complete a pass from behind their blue line.
All options at this point are extinct. |

Personally, I think Eskin is ignorant beyong comprehension.
Not a tweet - reported on whatever news (NBC?) with Sir Charles this past Sunday night.
So I am somewhat kidding that this is legit, simply b/c it is reported by Ape. |

That is frankly a pipe dream. I do agree Eskin is very good at breaking hard news before the next guy. But he is about as good as Ek at speculation, especially in hockey.
They are not trading Ryan for a couple of undrafted players and a low first round pick. |
