I think it's done from the sounds of it, just waiting for terms to be announced. - PLindbergh31

Maybe a modest raise. 700k or in that ballpark. |

The Flyers are one of the only teams that need no fewer than SIX top-4 defensemen on the lineup to feel comfortable... losing Carle just brings that number back down to five, which is far from the end of the world.
Mez, Coburn and Schenn should be able to offset a lot of Carle's offense and puck-moving by committee with elevated minutes. Coburn, especially, has been underutilized offensively for the past few seasons.
If they must still go after somebody in addition to Gervais, Colaiacovo wouldn't be a bad choice. He had outstanding puck-possession metrics while playing alongside of Pietrangelo at even strength against very tough competition. He would also bring a superior shot to the PP as well. Durability would be the area where he would fall short of Carle, though. - Tomahawk

After Leighton fell on his face in the SCF in 2010, then the goaltending carousel in 2011, Flyers were desperate to solve the goaltending issues. A mandate came directly from Ed Snider.
The scary thing is, the Flyers have invested a fortune, and the issues may not have been solved. - PLindbergh31
So get Bryz, but for 5 years.
Anyway, water over the bridge now.
He should be fine this year, hopefully a little more consistent. |

you'd think they learned something about these 10+ year contracts
maybe this year they are applying it, but the length of Bryz's deal is mind boggling - Marc D
With a NMC to boot of course! I wonder if there's some escape clause on that after so many years or something? Maybe he gets to give a list of 5 teams or something at some point. Can you honestly see him in O&B until 2020? |

god damn you...
Corsi On Ice Shot Differential: Semin 5.21, Ryan 1.31
On Ice Save %: Semin 0.917, Ryan 0.910
GA On Ice per 60: Semin 2.46, Ryan 2.48 - bradleyc4
No offense, but those numbers don't mean much w/o putting them into context, especially Corsi, and there has been no direct correlation established between the quality of defenders on the ice and the on-ice-save-% of goalies. You have to take into account quality of competition and zone-starts to make the numbers mean anything.
Just from a cursory glance at what behindthenet.ca has for both players, Ryan faced tougher competition and still did a better job of pushing the play forward, whereas Semin was mostly sheltered defensively (faced low-quality QoC + more offensive zone %) and didn't exactly feast on the second-tier checking that he faced (could have more to do w/ Hunter's passive style versus Semin's offensive capabilities). It's also noteworthy that Ryan is trusted to kill penalties while Semin isn't let anywhere near the ice when the Caps are a man down. |

You would hope so. Another inconsistent campaign, and it will be open season on Bryzgalov for sure. |

A lot of money for too many years which can't be buried because Homer messed up on the 35 year old birthday rule. It hurts for sure. I thought it was worth the shot at the time because he appeared to be the missing leadership link. It just didn't work out. Now Richards is gone anyway. - TJ
i think that gets a bit exaggerated, pronger can still be placed on LTIR. it impedes your ability to make some moves in the offseason a bit, but it's far from being a "cap disaster." during the season, the flyers can utilize that space
it was a risky move, and if it comes back to bite the flyers it won't be because of the money, it will be because of the young players anahiem received in return (sbisa, 1st round picks). it was a risk worth taking, though, imo. tough to acquire elite top pairing d-men |

See the first paragraph of the blog -- There is time and now plenty of cap space w/o Carle or Jagr this offseason to improve team.
But there is no way to spin the handling of Carle and ZP/RS (when it turned out Pittsburgh wasn't a serious consideration for either player) as anything but a pair of miscalculations on what they initially WANTED to do. - bmeltzer
We still have plenty of time to get this team in order. There all nice players but it's not the end of the world. I'm just sick of hearing " how we going to replace so and so" like their not replaceable. Players are different and to just assume another player can't step in or be added is just mind- boggling when none of the players who left were all-stars last year. You can still add Players that fit what your trying to do. Doesnt always have to be a big name and sometimes Homer does a great job of getting players who are ready to break out like Carle, mez, coburn and Grossmann. People need to stay patient and let this summer play out before acting like we're done bc of the players who have left. It's just ridiculous IMO. |

It is more complicated then blind love for Homer + staff.
Most fans appreciate that they go for it, try to win every year, and max out the salaries doing so.
Otoh, most fans are also critical of their mistakes and dealings when appropriate.
Not really blind love.
Trading Carts and Richie took balls. I think most admire that kind of risk taking attitude.
I think he took a lot of criticism at the time for the Pronger deal, the big trades last summer, smaller mishaps such as the Gagne trade, the Carcillo deal and the penchant to throw away 2nd round picks to get other teams to take their salary dumps. The Jvr deal could certainly blow up in their face. - Marc D
I admire the Flyers much like my team in that they always try to improve and have never "tanked" a season. That shouldn't make Homer immune from criticism, as you pointed out. Lord knows we have killed Sather over the years on FA signings! |

My problem with the deal was that the Flyers gave up as much if not more for a 34 year old Pronger than Anaheim and Edmonton gave up for Pronger in his prime. |
