they way i look at it that injuries always happen. and it's nice to have some competent players that you can call up from the minors when that happens

also if you start off not signing vets and just letting those guys try and fill out the roster, what happens if they can't? why not just sign vets to do the job, if they suck you can always waive them and call up waiver exempt guys like gus and manning
