Here is a back-of-the-envelope balance sheet for a couple of years ahead:
It appears to me that 2013-14 is our year to go for it, assuming players develop as we hope. After that, Schenn, Couts are RFAs. Lets say they sign short term deals like Giroux's current deal by that time, which means an increase in salary of about 5 mil between the two of them for the club. Read is an UFA, add about 2.5 mil there at least if he keeps scoring 25 goals! Hartnell is probably signed by that time for at least 1.25 mil more. And Meszaros is an UFA (1 mil more, perhaps), while Kimmo comes off the books. Either we resign Kimmo at say 4 m or get someone else for same price so savings of about 2 m at most on that front perhaps. This means that there is a projected increase in salary from curent payroll of probably 10 mil, plus Giroux signing (another 5.5 mil).
In other words, no way in hell we can ice this much young talent by 2014-15. This means we need to go for it all in 2013-14 with this current lot. - PT21
keep buying tix and jerseys let's get that cap up

Doan isn't entertaining offers until July 9th, to give Greg Jamison time to sort out the issues in Phoenix. If they stay in Arizona, he's staying with them. |

Lets just say that Phoenix leaves and Doan becomes available I would assume there will be teams offering him ridiculous deals. I think Doan is a long shot to land in Philly, imo. |

+1. Don't see him coming to Philly.

Yeah I knew he was waiting to see how everything in Phoenix pans out. It'd be awesome to see him in the O&B though.
Didn't think he'd command that much. Wow |

I would still like someone like Fehr provided that he is healthy - he is capable of 15+ goals lost from JVR/Jagr |

Eddies pockets run deep, its Homers job to fit it in under the cap. No worries. - stveshdy
In fact, I forgot about Simmer. Thats another 2 mi probably. We are heading for about a 15 mil increase from current payroll in 2 years, so clearly several players will have to go, for even Eddie's deep pockets cannot overturn the laws of arithmetic.
So, 2 year window. If this is not the year, then a 1 year window. Then the restart button all over again. |

Dont hit the restart button just yet. Homer can find a way to keep this young core together (most of it that is). |

They lose about $11mm next summer in Timonen and Hartnell, and in 3 years they'll lose Briere's hit. |

Which is why I'd offer him one year, at around $1.2mm or so. |

He seems talented enough to take a flyer (pun intended) on if he can be signed on a 1 year deal.

I assume they will resign Harts. I don't see the replacement materializing within 1 year. Simmer is not skilled enough to be a 1st line winger. As for Timmo, we will need to replace him, or resign for a lower figure. Of Coburn, Schenn (L), Meszy,Grossmann, I don't see a # 1 D-man. Briere's hit vanishes after 3 (so 1 year too late for what I am saying), but we also lose a heckuva playoff performer and I don't see how that helps. The ultimate goal is to win a cup, not keep the core together. |

Simmonds is 23 and coming off a 28 goal season, bit early to say he'll never be a first liner.
If you believe the core can win you a Stanley Cup, you keep it together. |

Number of ways. Signing players to cap friendly deals which they have done in the past. Another way is not resigning some of the older players. Will see what happens but its too early to think the Flyers only have a two year window. |

Its not just the core though, its also the vets. If they lose Hartsy, Briere, And Kimmo. how do they replace those? They are not bit players but crucial ingredients. If you replace with free agents, they will cost as much. If prospects, they will take a couple of years to develop.
All I am saying is, Flyers are in one of those rare positions: productive vets and lots of underpriced young talent. After 2 years, I am not saying the clubs will go south, but this particular window will close, just like the Richie-Carter window closed after a couple of years. |

But the difference between the Giroux/Cooter/Schenn squared/Read/Voracek era and the Richie/Carter era is in the pudding.
Look how many more young, core pieces we have....ya know? This team is much, MUCH more promising than the one 3 or 4 seasons ago.
That being said....I wish Pronger was playing |
