Doan was always my first choice even above Parisi, bit I really don't think we are getting him. So what do you guys think about Kyle Wellwood for a third line role? And It will keep with the brothers and BFFs theme. - TheGreat28
Not real interested in Kyle Wellwood, although he did have a good season in Winnipeg |

my point is that if anyone jumped to conclusions, it was homer. coulda hung onto JVR until after july 1 to see how things shook out. it's obvious the schenn deal has been ready to be made for a while. - isaiah520
The Schenn deal was a move made bc of the chance Carle walks. They got back a young physical defenseman who blocks shot and can move the puck some. |

As with all sports, more than one way to skin a cat.
Some teams have done it with one or two great D - Doughty, Chara, Pronger, Niedermayer, Lindstrom.
Some teams do it with great goaltending - Hurricanes.
Some do it with both.
Does anyone here think the defensemen that Lavy has here are worse than the team where he won the cup? - Daman
everybody offers up the canes as the example of the no name d that got it done, but frankly, they are in the vast minority. most cup teams have that horse on d and that's exactly why homer went out and paid a kings ransom for pronger. |

If they can't add Doan, I'd look at a guy like Peter Mueller on a cheap, short deal. - Jsaquella
I like him but so does the training staff...job security.
You don't like Read with G and Hartsy? |

The current top 5 is better than the top 5 they had when they went to the conference finals in 2008, at least on paper. - Jsaquella
they weren't good enuf then and they aren't good enuf now. homer loves dmen, so I'll stick w/ my prediction that he'll make a deal for a puck mover between now and the TDL. |

Why not? Size?
I have this feeling that he hasnt signed yet because he has a deal with the Flyers but waiting for Ryan trade. |

I'm open to trying it. But while I think that Schenn, Couturier, Simmonds and Voracek have the room to grow and get better, I think Read stays where he is.
He's 26. I think he stays a solid guy who will be a decent two way guy with speed and get 17-22 goals a year |

He's not a very good two way player, and if they're adding third liners, I want them to be good two way players.
Mueller I see as more of a top 6 guy |

Flyers scored plenty last year, and JVR had 11 goals, I don't think scoring is an issue provided the team stays relatively healthy. If there are some injuries among the top 9, then there may be some problems. But that can pretty much be said for every team in the NHL.
Will the Flyers improve on their point total from last year? Who knows, but more consistent play from Bryzgalov will go along way. - PLindbergh31
him and jagr combined for 30 and we had a lot of rookie success and career yrs last yr, so I dunno. |

Clearly the elite D man is one of the better ways to do it. And why we got Pronger for sure. 3 cup runs in six years. And oh yeah, 3 different teams.
But we don't have that anymore. I would love to see Coburn step up this year. I think he is well conditioned, has a giant reach, can play physical, can skate and even bring the puck up the ice.
Our D reminds me of something New Jersey would have over the years. A deep defense. Aside from not having a Stevens or Niedermayer, two average players anyway, we don't play that same defensive, agressive style. |

Fedetenko should be good for double digits 10-12. So that replaces JVR from last year. I don't think Talbot will score 19 this year, but I expect to see more production from Schenn, and Couturier being they will be in more prominent roles and more ice time.
Briere can also score more this year as well. |

He got nearly 50 points playing mostly third and sometimes 4th line role, though admittedly with some PP time.
I think Simmonds is the guy in that grouped who has plateaued. But I can live with where he is at. |

eh, we just have different takes on it
i don't see the jvr for schenn swap as having such a "present needs" focus. i see it as more of a long-term thing (lack of young d, surplus of young forwards, and probably homer valuing luke highly). so i don't think what went down (or didn't go down) from 7/1 on would have much of an effect on the decision to make the trade
i see what you are saying, that you would have rather held on to jvr and dealt him for someone more comparable to carle. i just don't think that proves (or even suggests, imo) that homer made that trade under some kind of an assumption that carle was absolutely coming back. i don't think the two situations are so closely linked |

don't players have to pass a physical to complete a trade? how would that not apply to pronger?
also, let's get mueller. |

coby's taken steps back, but mainly forward throughout his tenure here. now, he's prob our best dman given kimmo's health status. |

i always liked doan, not too many players left like him in the nhl, i would be ecstatic if we got him, he fills the a major hole...imo he is the perfect fit on the top line with g and hartsey.
i feel he will get 4.5-5.5 for 4 years imo, and should be worth it, idc about his age because we need some older guys to round off the team.
hopefully danny b has invited him to sea isle, seems to be a good sticking point to play in philly. |

I would like to see them add another scoring winger. Doesn't have to be Ryan or Nash but maybe a 20 goal guy who they can get for a pick and prospect. |

Good point about passing the physical. With the way the Flyers luck goes sometimes if he was traded he would have a miraculous recovery and score the SCF GWG against the Flyers. |

your read is equally plausible, but I don't like the value on our side...needed a little more coming back. |

I think once Voracek is re-signed that will be it, barring an unforeseen trade. |
