I'd want the ability to talk to Weber if I'm giving up a huge package.

I also wonder how willing Weber would be to negotiate a new deal being that the new CBA could possibly eliminate the Hossa/Kovalchuk/Parise/Suter megadeals.

I mean, he's certain to get a huge deal regardless of when he signs, but it could be potentially richer under the current CBA

well written Bill, I think if the Preds want to trade Weber, they will want alot of the youth the Flyers have in return. I dont know if it is worth trading a few key pieces to land Weber. It remains to be seen on what happens but right now Polie is in a pickle.

I don't wanna loose Couturier or Schenn but I know one of those guys would be in a package fro him. I don't know if I am looking to trade away the farm, but as you stated Weber better want to sign long term or no deal.

They should give weber a 1 year offer sheet Nashville will match and then Nashville can not trade him so basically the will either not match or let him walk for nothing the next year

Think about Howson's dream package for Nash, and then double it. That's what Nashville will probably get for Weber at this point.

If he looks unwilling to re-sign with NSH, better to just offer-sheet the guy for 1-year, have them match it, then they're prohibited from trading him for 1 calendar year which means he'd be guaranteed to go to market and then pull out all the stops then.

Yes and piss off Poile and the rest of the NHL and make future dealings difficult while ruining a 30+ year friendship.

Put all the eggs into signing him as a Ufa next season. Plenty of cap room for us. Don't give away any of the young core. If he gets traded and flyers lose out on him. So be it we still have a solid young team.

this may not be a popular idea, as all teams would request unproven future youth in this situation, but would it be maybe a better franchise option for Poile to try to seek, in a package from a bidding team 2 already proven defenseman that are already signed, (as long as they are not already 30 or over of course)? Instead of a package of younger players, forcing an unplanned rebuild?
This way at least Poile, after being rocked losing his top 2 D men, regains some semblance of a competitive lineup moving forward, despite the losses.
Can this franchise keep a fan base in tact, in a southern market, after BOTH guys leave, starting over? They would have went from a very solid competitive playoff team, to a lottery team in a matter of 2 summers, and the core up front, Leguand, Erat, Fisher, still somewhat in there prime, with a few already capable defenseman coming in, could at least keep afloat, all while continuing to draft the way they do.

Weber will be skatingin the Red and White. He said so himself in the summer of 2008. If he ends up anywhere besides hockeytown I would be shoked.

I agree, I just dont want to loose alot of the young guys we have for him. I think if Weber doesnt sign the fan base will be very pissed at Polie and id make a bet that Weber is on his way out. Polie has to un-(frank) this mess before it gets worse

It wouldnt suprise me at all. They need a Lindstrom replacement, who better than Weber to replace him.

Good article Bill. Would it not be in Weber's best interest to sign a long-term contract before the new CBA? This would ensure that he get's a Suter+ deal vs whatever term cap may come into play with the new CBA. This of course comes down to him wanting that, and getting to sign with a team he would consider during UFA.

If this is the case, it will be a pretty interesting summer in my opinion.
