Joe, his knees can't be fixed. It is a chronic permanent condition. - MJL

Draft pick compensation. The Brewers knew if they couldn't sign Sabathia, they'd get a first round pick from whomever did.
That isn't the case any more. Rangers, from everything I've read, view Hamels as a rental. And with no draft pick compensation, won't give up top prospect(s) for him. - bradleyc4
I guess but acquiring Hamels makes them the clear cut favorite to win the WS. Isn't that what it's all about? |

It's all that matters. The end result. They traded the face of their franchise, and got minor league filler in return. When you are a GM (especially of a small market team) you can't afford those type of misses. - PLindbergh31
Cleveland definately missed on that trade but at the time getting back La Porta was considered the right move. I would rather get La Porta back in the deal who is a top prospect then not get him at all whether he turns out to be good or not. His potential was suppose to be high. |

The Brewers offered him over $100 million. CC like the NL and likes to hit. The Brewers certainly had a shot. Just didn't want to offer more years. - The_Universe
And what did Sabathia do with their 100 million dollar offer? Wiped his ass with it. |

I would to when you compare that number to what the Yanks offered. |

100% correct. Why did MLB take that pick away now? - stveshdy
Just a change in the newest CBA. |

I still can't believe the Jays got Brett Lawrie for Shawn Marcum. |

Figures. I would give up some decent prospects for Hamels but Im not giving up top guys unless he signs an extension with us. |

There's other available players that you can acquire -- either more cheaply, or that you can control beyond this season. |

Their General Manager knew the Yankees were going to be in the market for a starting pitcher. He couldn't have realistically believed he had a chance to sign Sabathia. The only time the Yankees monopoly money hasn't prevailed in recent years is with Cliff Lee. And in hindsight, I wish it had.
Greg Maddux also took less to stay in Atlanta. |

Ill tell you right now it cant be fixed.. ask David Segui.
Its not like he has a torn meniscus or some other form of injury where he can just go in have out patient surgery, rehab for a few months and be ready to roll.. |

It's a chronic condition, there's really nothing that can be done. There's no surgical treatment for it, it seems the only things that can be done is stretching and pain management. |

The Brewers took a shot getting Sabathia. It didnt work out but the prospects they gave up didnt pan out well either so no big deal. |

Amare Stoudemire appears to have a chronic knee issue as well. Not ideal when it comes to playing basketball. His contract has become an albatross. |

Exactly. The only loser in the Sabathia saga, was Cleveland. |

Honestly.. the benefits of stretching (deep stretching) are amazing. You can see low back and knee pain entirely disappear with stretching rehab. |

Not to sure about his condition but can he get done what all these basketball players are getting done out of the country? That plasma injection or whatever process it is. Players like Kobe Bryan, Brandon Roy, etc. have done. Not sure if this is even an option for Utley. |

I like Charlie, but this insistence on relying of the longball has become obsolete two seasons ago. After this year I'd like a house cleaning in management. Start a whole new era and let's get her done. Can't trade Howard but I'd like to see what my options are with Chase I play half a season Utley. Two years in a row of this circus with him refusing to get his knees fixed, has really soured me on him. Used to be my favorite philly. Thank God for Hunter Pence
Edit: I got sick of putting on the game and watching man on third with two outs a long time ago. - JoeRussomanno
you've got a better chance of scoring more runs over the course of a long season playing for the big innings than you do by giving up outs and scoring one run here or there. not always easy to watch, but one's own eyes deceive himself while watching baseball more than any other sport, imo.
btw cannot believe you've turned on chase, who was heading for the HOF before his knees turned on him and now thank god for pence, career average everyday outfielder. |

Yea.. it was HGH injections. No proven guarantee that it would help him... it could help him with complications that are secondary to his knee issue though. |

In hind sight, yes. At the time though, LaPorta was highly toted. Bummer he didn't pan out. |

the plasma injections are done here as well.. As a matter of fact.. both Gagne and Carter have had PRP (if thats what you are talking about) within the past 7 years. |

I'm just aggravated with this poop that goes on every year. If it's that bad just retire already. |
