the need for depth and prospects >>>> the upgrade to Weber - bradleyc4
Prety much, unlesss you can negotiate a fair deal.
Moving Couts AND Coburn is just ludicrous IMO, and some want to offer Jake or Read on top of the that! |

I dunno as a flyers fan, i pay higher ticket prices than those fans down south. Some of my money is going to inadvertently support those teams under this CBA. I dont wat too , as a fan, pay for Bettmans expirements. They failed. Move on. Why should the flyers loose talent over that? - Philly1980
Well, I empathize with your ticket cost woes, but unfortunately you and I don't get a seat at the bargaining table. How are the Flyers losing talent to revenue sharing? |

It's not even being arrogant, it's the first step in negotiating anything.
If you've ever watched Pawn Stars, it's the same process. Guy wants to sell something. He gives them the highest number he wants for it. Pawn guy gives him his lowest. They work their way to a price they're both comfortable with.
I really doubt the NHLPA is upset with the NHL's first proposal. It's a formality in negotiating, and you can't take it at face value. - feelingkettle
Exactly. You'll have similar results trying to buy a car or a house, the first offer is always bad. I sincerely doubt the NHLPA has hurt feelings, business is business. |

The first round pick in 2011 played right away. So saying that all your giving up is Read, is failed logic. Gustafsson, and the picks are valuable assets. - MJL
Is next years pick likely to make the Flyers out of camp MJL?
If Bourdon, Lilja, and Gervais are subject to waivers and no other moves are made, will Gus play in the minors MJL?
Instead of nit picking the crap out of 1 small aspect of the post, try and understand that what I was saying is that a deal of Read, Gus and a first will not greatly impact the flyers Current or Future roster much.
As a matter of fact, just ignore my posts. Pretend I dont exist. |

From a Flyer's perspective, would you do that deal?
I would. A first round pick is a valuable asset, for sure. And it is an asset that isn't fair to judge in hindsight. If kept, a pick could have turned into crap or into Weber (2nd rounder). But your point is accurate.
That said, I think a GM's job is always to place the team in a position to win the cup. The Flyers are a team that doesn't need to rebuild to accomplish this - they are a team that is right there. Adding Ryan and subtracting Read and a 1st rounder with potential is well worth it to me.

by lowering cap hits, not allowing players to sign with other teams until they are 100. If all of this crap passes the flyers are screwed. It will require teams to farm and raise their own players instead of relying on free agency to pick up players.

I would do that deal too, but I agree with MJL in that you're giving up quite a few valuable assets, particuarly the 1st round pick. |

I'm with you there but usually when the majority of us fans agree on a trade scenario means it probably won't happen. |

I agree. I think we can afford to either move players and a prospect or two, but keep all our draft picks, or move prospects and draft picks but keep all our roster players.
If we move 3 or 4 roster players and give away lots of draft pick too it will handicap the team such that even with Weber we won't be competitive.
As this prospect camp has shown, we don't have any high level prospects in our system now - but we have several that could be 3rd/4th line NHLers given time. So we're not in a position to be able to move roster players and replace them with talent in our system now. - BringBack25
exactly. a team like the Kings stocked piles picks over the last 10 years and that set them up in a position to move Schenn (a kid not on their team yet) and Simmonds (plus a 2nd) for Richards then move Johnson for Carter. they had the depth already. I love Weber, love Ryan and like Nash (not the salary tho) but to loose too many pieces for them would hurt the team in my opinion. they don't have guys ready to step in on the first two lines or first 2 d pairings. |

And Nashville has already proven that having Weber (and even Suter) plus a good goalie and not much else is not the way to win a cup. |

The Flyers aren't screwed. They've survived reasonably well under the cap, and nobody is coming to take away their young talent. |

As a hockey fan first, I am all for the supporting the other team's that need it. However, I do believe that some franchises need to be relocated, namely Phoenix and Florida. Statistics have shown that youth hockey has grown a ton in these southern markets and teams like Nashville, Dallas, etc. can succeed. |

You may be nasty, but also smart.
With the departures of JVR and Jagr, our depth has evaporated somewhat. To trade two forwards for one could be dangerous.
I would be more tempted to trade 1 forward, 1 fringe D-men, and picks. This allows for a current upgrade, with the downside in future years if the pick could have turned into something.
Doesn't Anaheim needs picks more than we do? As many have suggested, our D-corp is pretty much filled out. The top 9 forwards are pretty set, with 1 or 2 potential openings. If memory serves, Anaheim wasn't close to making the playoffs last year and their team sucked a biggy.
Send them the picks Homer. Give up Read, MAB, and even Gus.

+1
I hate the idea of taking away two forwards, especially two good 2 way forwards like Read and Voracek when our biggest problem was team defense.
