This is not hard to figure out. If Weber signs the offer sheet, he wants to play in Nashville and they match the offer sheet. If he wants to test free agency, he does not sign the offer sheet and Nashville will look to trade. - jbetzler
can the preds afford to pay 34 million dollars to 2 players this year? |

Poile was doing what he could do with the resources at hand, doubt he wanted to spend more then 7 million on one player given the restricted budget the Preds have. - Alexzanki
if that is the case, he deserves this fate.
a teams captain, leader and best player should be paid like one. period. |

It is a thief type play ,but it is legal .That being said i still just dont like one team and their fans having to suffer to possible demise of their franchise its just bad optic to me - top shelf 15
why is the offer sheet considered so bad? in the nba this happens all the time but for some reason in the nhl it is dubbed a dirty move.. if nashville cant keep players or pay them what the "market value" is who do you blame ? should they even have a team?. toronto and montreal cant support everybody there has to be some serious team relocation going for these teams that make no money |

would you trade couts, voracek, mez and a cuople of picks for weber? - tomburton99
Probably not Coots and Voracek. Maybe Coots, Mez, read and a couple of picks...
But this might even turn out to be a better deal.
I still beleive that Nashville let's him go to Philly and then a second transaction takes place with players going back to Nashville for some of the compensatory picks. |

All teams in the league operate under the same rules, some are better businessmen, some have better locations, some are better at scouting. The rules make it a level playing field. - twotoekenn
Whomever has the gold makes the rules Looks like nashville doesnt have enough gold |

If this is true then yes he is the author of his teams demise, but iam still under the belife that he was never going to commit to nashville long term and poile knew this - top shelf 15
then he should have made a trade. |

The rumor was that another team had upped their offer to make them the forerunner and that when they pulled the offersheet. Its their star they should be allowed to trade him to the highest bidder without interference from a team that had been priced out - top shelf 15
That's not how the rules are written, though. |

Weber and Pronger on the same blue line, jeez you'd see a lot of goalies hitting the LTIR with shattered sternums |

why shoudl they? they should have done what philly did if they wanted him that badly... its a smart play by philly to get the guy they wanted... its extremely gutsy because if it goes through they lose 4 1st rounders and who knows who they could turn out to be... or if the offer was that good nashville should have just taken it... thats the risk with letting rfas go this long unsigned |

Nashville has been growing their fanbase ,and have iced some very competitive teams .But by rich teams looking to pilfer their riches before they can establish themselves ,how can we ever expect the league to grow |

what part of a restricted budget do you not understand , if he had more money at his disposal for sure he would sign him to what he was intended then this poop would of never happened.Just look at the Preds payroll for the last few years...... |

so you guys are pissed about the offer sheet? you know when the rich teams couldnt sign him away? ALL OF LAST YEAR... get the deal done instead of playing hardball with your captain and cornerstone and maybe hes not gone now |

Because he was their star ,and he was needed to help keep their franchise growing and one day maybe not need the handouts the rich teams often female dog about handing out to them |

Well, they've got big problems if there's no money, as they still have $13m in cap value to add before they reach the floor. |

How do we not know they were not trying to lock him up long term ?Because all indications out of nashville is that they where .If weber wasnt going to sign long term what differense does it make about arbitration |

Because they used the language about cap circumvention to create precedent. There are now specific rules about what is and is not legal in these situations. Kovalchuk's situation and the results of it are exactly why this is a clearly legal contract.
I will say, though, I don't think it's exactly fair that NJD got penalized draft picks for being the guys who forced these rules into place. - BulliesPhan87
Exactly - the rules changed with Kovalchuk and could very easily change again now. Lou clearly thought that the Kovalchuk deal was clearly within the rules. The League decided differently.
The League right now has a very strong interest in not approving this deal, especially if Nasville matches. This plus the Wild signings seriously undermines their arguments to the PA about the need to roll back salaries to protect small revenue teams.
(I wonder if Holmgren sent this to the league for pre-approval?) |
