well then if they knew that the trade him at the draft for the highest 1st rounder you can get + and tell your fan base... look he wouldnt sign with us so we just got us another cornerstone to play around - DarcyTucker16
They where trying to win a cup to grow their fanbase, and there is no way you could sell that by trading weber |

How do we not know they were not trying to lock him up long term ?Because all indications out of nashville is that they where .If weber wasnt going to sign long term what differense does it make about arbitration - top shelf 15
then trade him... your telling me they couldnt have got the 1st overall from edmonton who are dying for defenceman plus probably some other picks or prospects... then you can tell your fanbase... look he didnt want to sign so we got what we could while his value was still high? |

what part of a restricted budget do you not understand , if he had more money at his disposal for sure he would sign him to what he was intended then this poop would of never happened.Just look at the Preds payroll for the last few years...... - Alexzanki
restricted budget means allocating money properly.
keeping the best defenseman in the league as a part of your team should have been a priority.
what part of this don't you understand?
....oh, nevermind, you're the columbus fan |

Exactly - the rules changed with Kovalchuk and could very easily change again now. Lou clearly thought that the Kovalchuk deal was clearly within the rules. The League decided differently.
The League right now has a very strong interest in not approving this deal, especially if Nasville matches. This plus the Wild signings seriously undermines their arguments to the PA about the need to roll back salaries to protect small revenue teams.
(I wonder if Holmgren sent this to the league for pre-approval?) - Canada Cup

I sincerely doubt they explore the exact same route for the exact same kind of situation. They did it last time to set precedent, to outline how far the rules can be pushed. The most effective solution to these contracts is the CBA negotiations. Of course, as you suggested, I'm sure the NHLPA will have a laugh when owners say player salaries are too high. |

what does the fans in edmonton have to do with it? im saying it woulda have been way better for nashville to tell their fans "hey we got a new cornerstone cuz our old one doesnt like us" instead of "hey were not doing anythign with a guy we knew wouldnt sign here"
and if you want to bring edmonton fans into it i can guarentee they would have loved to have got weber |

When brendan shanahan was signed as a RFA from NJ by stlouis .Nj requested and recieved scott stevens by an arbitrator as benig fair compensation |

Didn't it take them a week to investigate Kovalchuk? Didn't they retroactively look at Pronger's contract at that time too? - prock
Yes and what were the changes? The salary of the last year must be half of the first NOT including bonus money. Flyers had a problem with it in talbot's contract last year |

The problem is not the offer sheet or Webers contract. The problem is that the finical gap between high and low revenue teams is too big. The little guys can't afford to meet a salary floor that grows every year because of league revenue growth driven by 3 or 4 teams. |

The funny part would be Nashville matches, and Philly gets penalized for offering a contract that circumvents the cap anyway. |

That’s not quite how the rule works. It’s “the salary of each year can’t be less than half of the year previous”, or something like that. And that’s been in place since the CBA was written in 2005. |

ya in essence im sayin it was well played by philly (if the contract is approved) and a bad play by nash because they had a lot of different outs before this happened |
