Flyers would get one or 2 of those picks back, but Nashville would most likely prefer the players. Plus we could stand to lose some salary at that point anyway. - flyler
Agree. Here is what happened according to an archived article from a newspaper in the Gratton trade:
"Clarke made the trade to avoid the risk of losing Gratton, whom the Flyers had signed to a five-year, $16.5 million offer sheet. The Lightning could have kept him by matching the Flyers' offer to the restricted free agent.
Technically, Tampa Bay did not to match the offer, then traded back to the Flyers the four first-round draft picks Philadelphia had to give the Lightning as compensation for signing Gratton.
In return, Tampa Bay received Renberg and Dykhuis." |

How, exactly, is the CBA being cheated? The CBA allows offer sheets. It's a valid tactic to make your team better.
One can debate the "honor" of such a tactic, but it's certainly not cheating by the letter of the law. - Jsaquella
by the letter of the law, the devils didnt cheat by signing kovy.....we all know what happened there |

thing is they did cheat the intent of the CBA... hence why all the ruckus... However now that they have modified that specific contract type since then they can no longer say they cheated the intent of the CBA because they just re did it stating what the intent is |

This x 1000
As for your point #3, x 1,000,000.
(frank) the owners. We lost a season of hockey to put in place a ridiculously restrictive salary cap system that was supposed to save the league. Then the owners basically threw all of that away.
97.3% of Weber's money will come in the first 11 years. 2.7% over the final three (0.9% per year!).
No way is Shea Weber going to be playing for a million bucks a year at age 40 (when league minimum will be at least 2 mil) and everyone and their grandma knows it.
Again. (frank) the owners. |

i didnt like the deal (still dont) and was fine that they rejected it but i think the whole punishment of a 1st, 3rd was too much
technically speaking they followed the rules, the arb even said that there shouldnt be a penalty for it and with numerous contracts like that the other teams werent punished it just seemed harsh, sure i can see them penalizing the devils for that but to take away a 1st is kinda pushing it
but even though there are now amendments its still "against the spirit" of the CBA and it is really no different then before, just it follows new guidelines in which the league put in place to save face |

If the NHL had any spine, they'd invalidate this deal AND take Philly's first round picks, anyway.

i wonder IF the league deemed that it circumvents the cap and does void the contract but its matched, would nashville (or philly) be penalized?
its going to go through, and i believe nashville will match

Stop whining. Why is it always Leaf fans doing the crying. Grow a set and stop feeling sorry for yourself. The Leafs should be so lucky to have a GM with Holmgren's vision and conviction. |

The Philadelphia Flyers have signed defenceman Shea Weber to a 14-year offer sheet worth a total of of $110 million. The deal includes $68 million in bonus money in the first six years. The Nashville Predators have seven days to match the offer if they wish to retain Weber's services |

My god. Well, this is a nice thing to wake up to. I guess the Flyers figured they haven't done anything really stupid this offseason yet, and being the attention seekers that they are, they figured "why not?"
And now the owners are gonna keep female doging about they contracts as if it's the players' faults for taking these ridiculous amounts of money.
And knowing the Flyers, they've probably been planning on giving this offer sheet out since Weber's little WWE move on Zetterberg in the playoffs. They love guys that do that poop. |

Considering they lost 7.5mil last year & their franchise is valued at 164mil I highly doubt they want to max out their cap every year. |

Their problem may NOT be salary. It may be the need to pay $27m in the next 12 calendar months. The franchise is worth around $160m, and in April the Nashville paper reported that the owners had to kick in $60m of their own money because they were losing money as an operation.
Do they have $27m in liquid cash to actually pay him?

And if they pay out the $110,000,000.00 contract to Weber in 666 separate payments each check would be $165,165.16. Imagine having 666 checks coming your way at 165k over the next 14 years. |

Ah yes, the "conviction and vision" to blatantly violate the intent of the salary cap system that the owners spent a full season to fight for.
This has nothing to do with which particular team any of us are fans of. This should offend any fan of hockey sick of listening to owners crying poor while they find loopholes in their own pathetic systems.
If even a single game is cancelled this year, you wouldn't consider that a slap in the face as a fan? The hypocrisy is staggering. |
