Sabres Closing in on a “serious goalie” THIS Weekend
This from a source….the names I would imagine are limited to likely Hellebuyck or Logan Thompson. Stay tuned… |

They are not paying Helly that kind of money, and I will take my chances with Levi and UPL vs Logan T. |

Hellebuyck is not getting traded this week. Cheveldayoff just announced this week that he isn't looking to trade him right now and will continue to discuss an extension.
Logan Thompson has not demanded a trade and Vegas has no motivation to move a 1A/1B making the league minimum for the next 2 years. So let's say they trade him. They have no cap space to take anything in return, so it will be picks and ELC contracts. Then they also have to find a 1B goalie with no cap space.
I guess that takes us full circle to the Jack Campbell sweepstakes... |

Khudobin has a .916 career NHL save%. That’s some serious goaltending. My sources say the Sabres are in talks with his VHL team. Stay tuned…. |

Daily Faceoff has the Sabres goaltending ranked 27th out of 32 teams.
Given they are on the cusp of being relevant again in the Atlantic plus the strength of their farm system, its not that hard to believe their looking to upgrade in net.

Were the Sabres one of the 9 teams linked to Zack Aston-Reese?
He signed a PTO with the Leafs, who were not on the list. I think a couple of readers predicted that he would likely settle for a PTO or 2-way deal. |

Sure, but it is hard to believe that Hellebuyck and Thompson are the two likely to be dealt at this point. Vegas has no flexibility to replace him and Hellebuyck is a complicated player to trade given his contract status and significance to Winnipeg. If BUF takes on someone else, it would be a cheap acquisition worth trying out, maybe on a PTO. |

There's that thought or you could believe they are a top 4 Dman and a #1 goalie away from being very legit in the east. You would think Sabres fans are tired of being doormats and see the logic in trading some of their prospect depth to complete that roster.
Just saying.

Nobody is disagreeing that Buffalo is at a stage where a goalie upgrade could make sense. The issue is...Hellebuyck and Thompson aren't going anywhere this week. Jets will start the year with Hellebuyck and try to convince him to extend. But if talks go nowhere then that could be a deadline deal. Logan Thompson has not asked for a trade and won't be traded. Now if the rumour was about Hart or Vejmelka or Varlamov or someone feasible, then I might believe it. I'm also pretty certain Buffalo runs with UPL, Comrie, and Levi in the AHL. See how it goes. If they falter, address later. Not this week.

What about Gibson? The Ducks would take Comrie plus whatever D-man the Sabres want to get rid of to even out the cap hit. With Verbeek playing hardball with Zegras and Drysdale, it sure doesn't look like he's thinking about winning any time soon. He might as well give Gibson a chance to get back into the playoffs. |

As much as I'd absolutely LOVE to see Hellebuyck traded to Buffalo this weekend I don't think this "rumor" has any truth to it.
The Jets are a poorly run organization with chatter that the owner is quite meddling in day to day hockey decisions so combine that with the recent report from Friedman and some things Chevy has said recently has me thinking there's a Hellebuyck extension in the works.
I'm predicting it now, won't be surprised to be hearing in the next few weeks an announcement on a big new contract for Hellebuyck with the Jets, its likely to be really awful for the Jets but they're delusional so they'll think it's great.. 🙄 |

NHL GMs view Gibson as a liability. He's most valuable staying in Anaheim and potentially having his first good season in half a decade. Verbeek trading him will involve either attaching futures and/or taking an equally risky contract coming back. |

Doesn't Gibson have a full NTM, and he turned down a trade to Buffalo before?
