When it comes to Giroux, I have little worry. The Flyers will get him locked up, and then deal with the cap issues that may arise later. Sure they lost Carle after feeling confident they could lock him in, but he ain;t Claude Giroux.

Amen. I wonder what Hartnell is going to cost? Also there isn't going to be any good replacements for Timonen next off season. Probably have to go trade route to upgrade.

I as bummed out to see we won't get a chance at Enstromm. If you had a crystal ball, what teams look like they might be sellers at the trade deadline and who might we be
able to pry away? For all we know, Nashville may have tanked by then and be ready to trade Weber rather than pay the rest of that gi-normous contract.

yea, people are gonna have to get off of the " if they didn't trade so and so for weber, they're not gonna trade them for..." script.

first off, I'm not aware that a new trade proposal was seriously considered after the OS and secondly, it's irrelevant to the current reality even just a few days later. fact is, if the flyers have trouble getting out of their zone due to lack of puck moving ability and/or simply have a rash of injuries, we know that homer will not stand pat. there simply is not enuf top 4 level depth or potential on d in the flyers org.

Didn't we hear the same thing about crosby slashing at the dot after the 08-09 playoff series?

Thanks Bill....I don't post much but I never miss one of your blogs. You are simply the best.

I don't know if it's possible to get the cooperation from players but I always enjoy hearing about certain players off-season training plans. For example, are the Schenn Brothers currently training together? What type of training? I heard Luke was criticized in the past for becoming bigger but slower. How about Meszaros, is he at 100% from back surgery and training/skating? Are Giroux's wrists healed to begin training?

I think this kind of stuff makes for good July/ August reading as we wait for September training camp!

Thanks again for all you do.

I believe Weber cannot be dealt until this time next year.

It would take a very big trade offer to lure him away from Nashville.

Well thus far, all reports indicate that Holmgren has absolutely balked at including anyone but Read and Meszaros in trade proposals, for everyone from Rick Nash to Shea Weber to Bobby Ryan. Why that would change from July 25th to August 1st escapes me. Perhaps once the season starts and injuries or poor performance change the picture it could.

But right now, there's really little chance of the Flyers suddenly deciding that a Schenn or Couturier or Simmonds or Coburn is worth a trade.

Spatso is 100% correct. The earliest the Preds can trade Weber is one year to the day they matched the Flyers offer sheet.

I think we should stand pat. Would have done more to get Weber (maybe not Couturier) but no need to worry about that now. Maybe Doan, but not at 7.5 for 4. I would like to see how the young guys perform. You never know who could impress at training camp. It is nice to have some cap space to fix any issues at the TDL. I expect big years from Couturier and the Schenn brothers. If Timo and the rest of the D can stay healthy I like the team and think they have as much of a chance as anyone else.

Yep. That would fall under the poor performance I was referring to...but we won't know that until season starts

Has there been any word out of PHX yet? I hope Doan resigns out there. Good player but not at that price.

Not much, seems Doan will take weekend or longer to decide. Lot of teams still in mix.

Bobby Ryan for a fair price, or no more moves. Let's see what we have here, with more ice time for Coots, Schenn, and others. Danny will have a bounce back year, maybe pot 30 again. Giroux hits 30 easy, as does Hartnell. Jake 25, Simmonds, 25, Schenn 20, Coots 20, Read 20.

I hope Gus does in fact win an opening night roster spot, with his confident words from last week. Schenn will be a beast for us. No young player is perfect, he will have bad moments and games. Mesz comes back strong and solid, Coburn shows his nasty side a lot more frequently, Kimmo has his minutes monitored and kept in check. Grossmann will be just fine, everyone gets banged up over the course of the season and I don't think he will have any major issues this season.

Of course, if some of the above doesn't go as "planned", Homer will adjust. If we totally bomb for 20-30 games, perhaps we over-pay for a coveted player or two. I suspect we'll be just fine though. Corry Perry next summer, anyone?

I don't think many fans have doubts of giroux getting resigned. Can't cross that bridge til next summer anyway correct? Looks like next summers it's market is going to suck, concerns about this d Core again are valid. Lets let them play, any word on MAB recovery?

we were talking about this a little bit yesterday, i can't help but think they need to look ahead a little bit, with giroux couturier AND schenn all coming up RFA at the same time.

Oh, totally forgot. Bryz will also play way more consistently, with a better GAA and save %. Not March-esque all season, but more along those lines. Leights plays 15 games max.

Yes, Giroux will expect the Flyers to pay him market value next time after signing the present deal that seemed below market-value even on the day it was signed.
- bmeltzer

The Flyers lucked out with the timing of Giroux's extension and the ROI they've managed to get with it -- if they had waited just a few weeks longer, it would have likely looked more like the Drew Doughty extension.

With that said, the deal amounts to a very sensible second contract that sees compensation rise commensurate with future production -- I'm sure it's the model that GM's and owners will tout if they try to place limits on second contracts in CBA negotiations.
