John Jaeckel: 2011 Draft One For The Ages?
- John Jaeckel

Nice update on the 2011 class. FWIW; For the first time in the last four years of watching Big Mac in person, he didn't give up a "What the F---- are you doing" goal against Kamloops this last Sunday..

I've heard great things about Broadhurst. A friend from the North pointed this gem to me a few months ago:

Damn. If only Stan was as good at trades too. If he keeps drafting talent this well then he's going to eventually have to trade some of it away. Hope Stan gets a trade advisor soon. Drafts since 2010 seem to be going quite well.

The one guy who could be a boom or bust is Shalunov.

I've read and heard that he definitely has the talent to be a good NHL player, but he's wildly inconsistent and doesn't always have the motivation to play hard.

::EDIT::

That being said, he's still very very young and the Blackhawks have an extremely solid core of leadership. Chicago is definitely a team that has the right players to push a guy to compete to his max.

Danault looked pretty good on that line w/Huberdeau in Game 2 of the Q vs Russia. A lot of energy

There's a bunch of NHLers in the making there, but I don't see any game-breaking talent there, so I'd lower my expectations if I were you.

Alex Broadhurst played for the Green Bay Gamblers in the USHL. I would hardly call that a lower level junior team. His linemates are playing for Western Michigan and Notre Dame. Not too shabbby.

Toews, Kane, Hossa and Sharp = game breaking talent for next at least 3 years

Solid/reliable complimentary players for modest salaries are what is most needed on this team.

Although you're from Quebec, you seem to have a pretty good command of English (no French slam there, either). Did you read the blog? I'm pretty clear that there are probably no superstars there. What do you want? An engraving?

What will make this class special is if 5-6 (or more) of these guys end up as useful/good NHL players. That is EXTREMELY unusual in one draft.

On a comedic note...

The kids over on Freiheit's Sabre blog are lauding the merits of John Scott as deterrent/enforcer.

Point conceded, though some would argue the USHL is not quite on par with the CHL.

All fair points, but let me just say, I don't think many in NA outside paid scouts knew how high his upside was until recently. While it is not the be all/end all, showing up big in a context like the Subway Series is usually a pretty good indicator of how good a kid can be. Though, yes, I will concede, he fell to the fourth round because of the scouting knocks you describe. Kid does not look like a low effort player in the Subway Series, FWIW.

I think MOST of the credit for this draft, 2010 and 2012 too goes to Norm McIver and some terrific scouts.

He's not exactly tearing it up as a 19 year old in the OHL, further underscoring my point about the difference between Canadian major junior and the USHL, 16 pts. in 20 games, smallish kid. Dunno.

Hey JJ,

I've been gone a while, and I'm wondering about the health of Hossa and Montador? Have you heard anything?

No idea on Montador, Hossa supposedly is 100% but it's one of those deals where he won't know until he takes his first hit.

You've gotta play him as a W, limited minutes and have a willing combatant on the other side. Otherwise, he is a waste of space.

I'd rather have Bollig who is a much better hockey player.

I did read the blog entirely.

Just thought the title was misleading. Don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan of Danault, but I'm not quite sure a draft without any game-breaking talent should be labeled as "One for the ages".
