Richard Cloutier: The Jeropotato Blog - Maxbone
1. I 100% agree about the "bad contract, big risk" return for Hemsky. I'll do Bourque for Hemmer any day actually, although I realize it would never work given that Montreal HAS to think about getting bigger and meaner at some point, right?
Bourque is a local and you never know, sending him out to be a pest on the Nuge-Eberle line might make a Bickell out of him. If not, pop him in the bottom 6.
2. Agree again, actually. Not because I believe in Klefbom, but because outside of Klefbom (and that's a big IF) no rookie D man should even come close to Edmonton. I think Klefbom (though more talented) is like a Dman Hartikainen at this point: better to play him top heavy minutes in OKC than 6/7 minutes in Edmonton.
3. Horcoff could be gone, but it'll likely more on account of bringing in a UFA like Zubrus/Antropov/Handzus/Bozak than it is because of drafting an 18 year old. I don't think he'll get bought out though. At the very least not until the Gagner situation is revolved. In fact, if Gagner wanted to do his pal husky-eyes a favour, he'd threaten arbitration to make keeping Horcoff a necessity.
4. 50/50 chance. You both make good points. Cupcakes for both.
5. There's a lot of bigguns - and a couple of can't misses - in the top 10 (Which I think is why people are going gaga about the draft). Really to say that we won't be taking small skilled guys is saying we'll take anyone but Lindholm and Drouin.
6. Well I don't think they'll be "slight" overpays. Horton will command major figures and Streit as well. In fact, even Bickell is reportedly being offered 3.5 to STAY in chicago, so if he tests add the standard 1.5 million. I'll take wild cards: Pascal Dupuis and Michal Rozsival
7. Yep.
8. Wishful thinking, but really I think this team could use about 5 muckers with bash and slam mentalities.
9. I agree, hard to regroup after a cup winning year. Too big of a hangover.
11. Coming from the guy who agreed with most of them. |

They won't get a first for Hemsky. - Maxbone
I've been telling you this for three years. As for not trading for a goalie, see the Pens. |
|
|
|
1. Edmonton can't find a suitor for Ales Hemsky, therefore he remains an Oiler for at least the start of the season.
2. Klefbom is overwhelmed and/or outperformed by Belov and another rookie D, and goes down to OKC at about the 12 game mark.
3. Horcoff is not bought out and remains an Oiler for at least 2013-14.
4. Ryan Smyth gets off to a pretty good start, but is scratched by Christmas...sometime in February he announces his retirement and finishes the season in another capacity.
5. Oilers use the 7th pick to take the BPA at the draft. Whomever that is, he gets sent down before 9 pro games.
6. Mac T overpays, slightly, for 2 free agents (top 6 fwd, top 4 D).
7. Oilers sign a career back up for a case of beer and 2 packs of smokes.
8. Oilers sign a couple has been bottom 6 forwards...who have huge bounce back seasons.
9. Oilers make the playoff's on the last day of the season.
10. Oilers get swept in the 1st round, and some player from the other team makes a bold prediction that praises the Oilers and where they are headed, using some standard hockeyspeak cliches.
11. Cloutier will say he predicted all of the above at some point or another.
12. Cloutier will threaten to quit hockey buzz....but of course, like herpes, will keep coming back.

I still don't understand why Horcoff would go. Its not like good third line centers who are good at faceoffs and have a sprinkle of offence are just littering the landscape. The Canucks traded Connauton and a 3rd just to get one of those 3 qualities.
Oilers ain't exactly desperate for cap space right now either. |

A goalie is probably our 6 or 7th most pressing need. Hence the whole euro backup pitch.
We have a goalie who may turn out to be a great player. Certainly starter caliber already.
He's not the problem and we wont be dealing any valuable assets for one |

If Cloutier was gm of the Oilers
1.Horcoff would have been bought out, and re acquired at least 5 or 6 times.
2.Klefbom would be given the C right away, and a statue.
3.The list of untouchables would be changed on a daily basis.
4.Mark Streit would be given Weber money, and a statue outside the new arena.
5.Other general mangers would continuously reject his calls because they would get sick of hearing how Hemsky is worth a 1st rounder.
6.Darnell Nurse would be at the bottom of his draft list, because for some reason he thinks we're fine on defence.
7.He would continuously brag about getting most of his playoff picks right to his fellow general mangers, and during interviews despite most people having the same picks.
8.National, and local media will always be confused when covering the Oilers as Cloutier would change his mind about issues, and players on a daily basis.. Sometimes during the same press conference. |

No, most of these predictions aren't very good.
Yea come on jeropotato! Cloutier's predictions are always spot on and totally not way off. EDM got Lucic for Whitney, Lander, and MPS.
Cloutier has seen Klefbom live many times in Farjestad. He has also followed many other 20 year old D man's smooth transitions to the NHL so he knows that Klefbom will be "playing top pairing minutes by the end of the year". |

i think the best EDM can hope for in Klefbom is a Oleksiak-like season where he plays really well in the AHL and plays up for 15 games |

MacT was saying that Horcoff and Hemsky have had to suffer through intentional losing, so their attitudes and accepting of losing may leave town. |

Agreed. We shouldn't expect more than that. Does not change how good klefbom may be if he needs 2 years in te ahl. Lets not screw up another prospect. Kid is only 20 and has barely played the last two years. |

For things that make the team worse because teams totally sell off quality centerman because they are so easy to acquire in the first place? |

We've just hit a new all time low here. Clouts are you that out of ideas right now? If i made 10 bold predictions would you give me your answers in your next blog? That would be neat. OK i'll give it a try.
1 the oilers will massivly overpay to move up to 3rd or 4th overall
2 the oilers buy out rick diptrepo for the islanders in oder to get a top prospect (rienhart, strom) or someone along those lines
3 the oilers will once again attempt to get jagr to sign inorder to provide mentorship for the kids
4 oilers will sign nick backstrom and trade dubnyk
5 oilers will trade for matt cook so he can takes runs at whoever looks at the kids the wrong way
6 fistric is resigned to play bottom six minutes and hit people
7 ryan smyth will score 20 goals and retire at the end of the year
8 one of the oilers young stars has a 100 point season
9 oilers will have a winning record but still not be good enough to make the playoffs
10 horcoff is bought out and hall is given the C
ok i guess i need two more in the way of taking shots at you soo
11 clouts will continue to talk trash about smyth and smid but admit that he's simply making up stories about them because he's got nothing better to do
12 clouts will write 1 (one) blog all year that takes a realistic view on the current state of the edmonton oilers.
hows that?
All jesting aside though richard i have to agree with you he didn't do a very goood job at all. |
