The 35+ issue with Streit is minor. He's only played 491 NHL games to this point. Lots of players continue to play at a high level at 35 or older. |

If they buy out Bryz that should be enough to get a GM fired. Bryz made roughly $18 mill for 2 years + another $23 mill for the buyout. That's slighly over 20 mill/yr for Bryz's services. There's no way Bryz isn't hoping to get bought out under that scenerio and become a FA able to pick his next team while still getting paid millions per year by the Flyers for the next 14 years.
It should be a cautionary tale to other GMs if the 2 highest paid goalies in the league signed to mega contracts get bought out early into their lifetime deals but it probably won't. Noone learned when the Isles signed DiPietro to the 14 year contract. The Isles will probably still be paying DiPietro when Garth Snow is in the grave. |

He hasn't really showed many signs of slowing down. Less wear and tear than, say, Kimmo. |

I suppose we have to hope that Streit is the next coming of Mathieu Schneider in terms of him remaining productive up until his 40th bday...

What about, this is purely hypothetical, if the Flyers traded him to another team and they bought him out, with the understanding that he could return to the Flyers for a huge discount? Say 1 million per season? Something like;
To Vancouver - Sean Couturier, a 1st and Danny Briere (buy out Briere)
To Philly - Ryan Kesler |

It does seem like both will be bought out to allow some wiggle room in the re-tooling process. So many people are calling out Holmgren and don't really see the big picture. Ultimately, he seems handcuffed in a lot of ways.
The position that the team is in right now is, in my opinion, a direct result of Pronger's injuries. How can that be helped? Your top defenseman (who ate ~25+ mins/game) goes down. There is a decent supporting cast in place, but that primary piece of the system is gone. What kind of position would Boston be in (defensively) if Chara was in a similar situation? I know that it's not a 35+ contract, but they play a similar role on the team. Hypothetically, what kind of position would they be in, all things equal?
Honest question... |

1. Cap circumvention
2. The CBO is more than just budgetary... Briere doesn't really fit into the lineup moving forward. |

As much as people are saying Streit is average defensively, you have to take into account that his puck moving skills and speed make the defensive unit better as a whole.
Streit can help transition the puck out of the zone, where last year it was difficult. Streit allows you to stop chasing the puck carrier and hit offense in stide instead of dumping the puck.
If Grossmann is healthy, he would be the perfect partner for Streit. Grossmann is best defensively and slow. Streit is best moving the puck and fast. |

No thanks, both to that deal and to bringing Briere back. It's not just the cap money, it's roster space. We've got young players who need to take the reins. |

Re: Briere
Why would anyone want him back at any price. I have all the respect in the world for him, but he cannot play wing and there is no point in having him center a 3rd or 4th line. With Giroux, Schenn and Couturier there is no spot for him to center either of the top 2 lines so where would you even play him? |

I'm pretty sure you can. There's been lots of conversations about say Ricky D going from NYI to a team (as per Bob McKenzie) that's willing to buy him out for a good young prospect. Kinda like, again, purely hypothetical here!!
To NYI - Luongo
To Vancouver - Rick Dipietro, Niederrietter and a 2nd. |

Don't bother Flyer fans with unrealistic stuff that will not happen especially when this is a flyers bog and this isn't even involving their team |

Your right about Briere, but I'm not sure if the Flyers want to compete next year that Schenn or Couturier are ready to be full time 2nd line Centers. I would rather get a Ribero or Weiss and move Schenn to LW. |

Per our own Bill Meltzer:
Can the Flyers and another team looking to buy out a player swap Briere for that player and then both teams use buyouts on the acquired player, with each re-signing with his "former" team as a free agent at a lower cap figure?
It won't happen, so forget about it. There is nothing explicitly prohibiting this, but NHL clubs have already been warned by the League not to even think about circumventing the rules or the case will be investigated by the league (and almost definitely result in punitive sanctions). A "trade" of this nature would blatantly violate the intent both of the buyout rules and the salary cap. It would be indefensible as anything but an end-around on the rules.
